Beyond Proof to Replace Ten Tables in Jamaica Plain

A few months ago, it was reported that a neighborhood restaurant in Jamaica Plain known for its locally-sourced New American fare would be closing and the owner would be opening a new concept within the space, and now we have learned more about what it will be.

According to a Facebook post, Beyond Proof is planning to open in the former Ten Tables space on Centre Street, with owner Krista Kranyak saying the following:

Dear Community, After closing my beloved Ten Tables, I dove deep into working behind shuttered doors. Now, I’m resurfacing and, with great joy, ready to open again and welcome you back....Welcome to Beyond Proof. Not just a new space, but a new way of gathering. Boston's first zero-proof bar....From the kitchen, we're serving Mediterranean-inspired dishes designed to be shared or savored slowly, alongside the drinks. This concept is deeply personal. Three years ago, I made the decision to let go of alcohol. In that process, I found myself searching for spaces and experiences that treated zero-proof offerings with the same care and creativity as everything else in the industry I've loved for so long. Too often, those spaces didn't exist. Now I'm seeing a shift. A movement. More people are looking for this kind of experience and bringing their own curiosity and care to it. Beyond Proof is my response to that shift.

The note goes on to say that Beyond Proof is slated to debut on April 7.

Ten Tables, which had been in its JP location for 25 years, also had two other locations in Cambridge and Provincetown, though those closed approximately 10 years ago.

Bluefin Restaurant and Seafood Market in Jamaica Plain Has Closed; Will Continue to Be at Farmers Markets

A seafood restaurant and fish shop in a Boston neighborhood has shut down, though the business will live on via farmers markets.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Bluefin's restaurant and seafood market in Jamaica Plain is closed, with a Facebook post from the business saying the following:

Dear Friends and Neighbors, Sadly, I have made the hard decision to permanently close Bluefin's 660 Centre Street location. I extend a big thanks to everyone who has supported us. We love being part of the JP community. On a positive note, our Farmers' Markets will continue operating as usual. So please come by, say hello, and grab your fresh, smoked, and tinned fish. We'd love to see you! To anyone who maintains a giftcard or Numarket balance, those will be honored at our Farmers' Markets.

Behan Caffe Plans to Open in Jamaica Plain

A new cafe may be on its way to Jamaica Plain, and it appears that it may have a connection to an iconic Irish pub next door.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the city's website, Behan Caffe is planning to open on Centre Street, with the address indicating that it would take over the space adjacent to the Brendan Behan Pub. The listing mentions that the manager is Michel Soltani of the Brendan Behan, and it also says that the space would include one room with dining and bar seating and that it hopes to acquire a full liquor license.

The Brendan Behan Pub dates back to the late 1980s, with Soltani taking ownership of the place in 2007.

A new coffee shop has come to Jamaica Plain.

According to a source, Viza Cafe is now open in JP, moving into a space on South Street about midway between Centre Street and the Arborway. Our source mentions that the new spot offers breakfast sandwiches and coffee while an earlier licensing board page stated that the space includes a main room with seating for 14 and a second room with seating for 6.

Ten Tables in Jamaica Plain Is Closing; New Concept Coming to the Space

A longtime neighborhood restaurant in Jamaica Plain that has been known for its locally-sourced seasonal New American fare is shutting down, though the owner of the place will apparently be opening a new concept there.

According to several sources, including posters within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Ten Tables on Centre Street is closing, with a Facebook post from the business saying the following:

After a quarter century of dinners, anniversary celebrations, first dates, and weeknight rituals, it's time to turn the page. Our last service as Ten Tables will be on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2025....I'm closing this chapter with immense gratitude—for every guest who squeezed into one of our tiny table tops, every farmer who showed up at the back door, and every member of our team who poured their heart into this restaurant. In this same beloved space, I’ll be reimagining what comes next: a new concept that honors the intentional, crafted, and change-making purpose that is my passion....Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for 25 unforgettable years at Ten Tables.... — Krista Kranyak (KK), Owner

In addition to the JP location, there had once been a location of Ten Tables in Cambridge as well that was open from 2009 through the end of 2015.

A brand new Korean street food spot has debuted in a Boston neighborhood.

According to a message sent by Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub along with an article from Jamaica Plain News, Gangnam Spice is now open in JP, moving into a space on Centre Street in Jackson Square. The article mentions that the new place offers Korean fried chicken and street snacks, while a check on its social media indicates that the business started out as a food truck that was first launched in April of 2024.

Brassica Kitchen Is Now Open in Its New Home in the Former Dogwood Cafe Space in Jamaica Plain

A couple of years ago, it was reported that a small Jamaica Plain eatery that had been a cafe by day and a restaurant by night was planning to open in a larger space next door, and now we have learned that it is up and running, though without the cafe.

According to its website, Brassica Kitchen is now open in its new home in the Forest Hills section of JP, with the place moving into the former Dogwood Cafe space adjacent to their old space. Both the website and a Bluesky post from datafran.bsky.social indicate that the people behind Brassica will be keeping the old space, though the website indicates that "we are...sadly saying goodbye to our long-time weekday cafe. Our former space at 3710 will be undergoing renovations (yes, more construction!) and we'll share all the deets and new concept once we are settled into 3712. 

Brassica Kitchen + Cafe first opened in 2016, taking over the space where Fazenda Cafe had once been; the restaurant offers such options as pizza, small plates, and weekend brunch items along with beer, wine, and cocktails.

Mr. Drinky Plans to Open in Jamaica Plain

It looks like a new spot for drinks may be on the way to Jamaica Plain.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Mr. Drinky is planning to open on Centre Street, with the address indicating that it would reside in a space across from When Pigs Fly and the Pond Street intersection. The article mentions that Alan Wong is behind the proposal, which is being called a "small craft cocktail bar" with small-plate options for food, and eight to ten seats at a bar along with some booths.

The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council supported the plans for Mr. Drinky, though it has more steps to get through including the Boston Licensing Board deciding which businesses get the neighborhood-specific licenses that are for 13 Boston Zip codes and which can't be be resold.

Ideal Pizza in Jamaica Plain to Be Reborn as Pete's A Pizza

A now-closed pizzeria in Jamaica Plain is going to be replaced by a pizza spot with a different name, though it will have a family connection.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Panagiotis Papadopoulos has been granted permission by The Zoning Board of Appeal to reopen Ideal Pizza as Pete's A Pizza, with Panagiotis being the son of Gervasios Papadopoulos who had first opened Ideal Pizza back in 1998. Gervasios sold the business in 2022, though UH says that the new owner abandoned the place last summer.

An earlier Reddit thread mentions that Pete's A Pizza will apparently be offering "a lot of the same items" served at Ideal Pizza.

BMS Paper Company and Market in Jamaica Plain Finally Gets Approval to Open Restaurant and Bakery

Nearly five years ago, a retail store in Jamaica Plain that sells restaurant supplies and more announced plans to expand, with its proposal including a restaurant along with residential space, and now we have learned that the plans are finally moving forward.

According to an article from Universal Hub, BMS Paper Company and Market on Washington Street has gotten approval from The Zoning Board of Appeal to redevelop its space to include a restaurant, bakery, and 82 apartments. The initial plans, which came out in the fall of 2020, included a roof deck above the restaurant, though it is not known if this will still be happening, so keep checking back for updates.

BMS Paper Company and Market was established in 1984.

Jamaica Mi Hungry in Jamaica Plain Has Closed

Last month, a second brick-and-mortar location of a Jamaican restaurant opened its doors, and now we have learned that its original location has shuttered.

According to a source, Jamaica Mi Hungry in Jamaica Plain is no longer in business, with a Facebook post from the business saying the following:

It is with great sadness that we announce the closing of our Jamaica Plain restaurant. Serving the JP community has been an incredible experience, and we are deeply grateful for the support, love, and memories we've shared with you all. We apologize for taking some time to make this announcement. We were truly indecisive because we wanted to explore every possible option to keep the location open. After much thought and effort, we came to the unfortunate conclusion that closing was the best decision. Thank you for welcoming us into your neighborhood and allowing us to be part of your community. We hope to continue serving you at our new location downtown Boston. We look forward to seeing you there!

Jamaica Mi Hungry debuted on Devonshire Street in Boston's Financial District in early April; a food truck which is used for catering remains in operation as well.

Several New Restaurants Being Proposed for Roxbury, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain

It looks like some new restaurants could be coming to sections of Boston that tend to be underrepresented when it comes to dining and drinking.

According to an article from Universal Hub, at least five new dining spots are being proposed for Roxbury, Dorchester, and Jamaica Plain, including Cool Shade Jamaican, which is seeking a full liquor license to open at 388 Blue Hill Avenue in Grove Hall; AAA Restaurant, an Hispanic food spot that is also seeking an all-alcohol license to operate at 3141 Washington Street on the Jamaica Plain side of Egleston Square; Doune & Pepe, a Caribbean fusion tapas-style restaurant that would open at 657 Washington Street in Codman Square, an as-of-yet unnamed West Indian dining spot that is seeking a liquor license to operate at 300 Warren Street in Roxbury, and a restaurant that the nonprofit organization Embrace Boston would open at 1200 Tremont Street in Roxbury.

More should be known about the progress of all of these restaurants over the coming weeks, so keep checking back for updates.

Oda by B.U Bistro Opens in the Former Simpli Bar & Bites Space in Jamaica Plain

A few months ago, it was reported that a pair of cafes known for their coffee and cocktails might be opening a third location where a Jamaica Plain restaurant had been, and now we have learned that a different place has opened within the space.

According to a source, Oda by B.U Bistro is now open in the Forest Hills area of JP, taking over the former Simpli Bar & Bites space on Washington Street. The new spot is a cafe that offers pastries, coffee, and tea, and it opens where a third location of Pomona Cafe & Wine Bar had originally been in the works, with the hope being for it to join other locations in Swampscott and Winthrop, though those plans apparently never came to be.

Abuela's Table Opens in the Former El Oriental de Cuba Space in Jamaica Plain

Last fall it was reported that a popular restaurant in Jamaica Plain had shut down after nearly 30 years in operation and it would be replaced by a new dining spot, and now we have learned that the new place has opened its doors.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, Abuela's Table is now open in the Former El Oriental de Cuba space on Centre Street, and as mentioned here earlier, the co-owner/chef of Tu y Yo in Somerville is behind the place. The new restaurant--which debuted late last week--offers flautas, empanadas, Mexican street corn, tamales, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and more.

El Oriental de Cuba had been known for such items as its Cuban sandwich, paella, grilled skirt steak, fried pork chops, chicken fricassee, and braised oxtail.

Viva Taco to Open in the Former Across the Border Space in Jamaica Plain

A brand new Mexican restaurant is on its way to a Boston neighborhood, moving into the space where a Tex-Mex dining spot had been.

According to an article from the Jamaica Plain News, Viva Taco is planning to open in the Hyde Square section of JP, taking over the former Across the Border space on Centre Street. The article indicates that the eatery will offer tacos and taco dinner plates along with burritos and bowls; no opening date has been given as of yet for the place, so stay tuned for any updates that come in.

Across the Border, which opened its brick-and-mortar restaurant in early 2023, also has a food truck business which remains in operation.

Jadu Is Opening a Brick-and-Mortar Restaurant in Jamaica Plain

A local business that has been focusing on wine-based popups is planning to open its very own brick-and-mortar location.

A message sent by Leah Klein of City Living Boston mentions that Jadu is looking to open in Jamaica Plain, moving into the space on Centre Street that has been home to Espresso Yourself since 2017. An Instagram post from Jadu gives more information, saying the following:

We will be closing the shop down for renovations soonish (exact date TBD), and then re-opening as Jadu — a coffee shop by day, and (liquor license pending) wine bar by night!...Maya, a JP resident herself, will take Jadu into its brick and mortar era....Gabby is going to continue to run the pop ups you know and love, under the name First Crush. Expect more wine parties, wine dinners, tastings, and some new concepts and formats....We have had the BEST time running Jadu together over the past year and a half, and will continue to collaborate and champion each other as we enter this new chapter!

Jadu got its start doing popups early last year in restaurants, bakeries, wine shops, and elsewhere in and around Boston.

bb.q Chicken to Open in the Former Cafe Beirut Space in Jamaica Plain

A Korean chicken chain that has a handful of locations in the Greater Boston area is opening a new outlet, taking over the space where a Lebanese restaurant had been.

According to an article from the Jamaica Plain News, bb.q Chicken is planning to open in Jamaica Plain, moving into the former Cafe Beirut space on Centre Street. Once it opens, the new outlet will join others locally in downtown Boston, Allston, Kenmore Square, Cambridge's Central Square, Lowell, and Quincy.

Cafe Beirut closed in January after being in business for 12 years.

Life Alive Is Opening in Jamaica Plain

A local group of cafes that feature healthy, organic food is once again looking to open a location in Jamaica Plain, nearly 10 years after we first reported its plans to come to the Boston neighborhood.

According to an article from boston.com, Life Alive is planning to open in the former Canary Square space on S Huntington Avenue this summer, with the upcoming eatery having seating for 75 along with a seasonal outdoor patio out front. Once it opens, the new outlet will join others locally in Boston's Back Bay and South End, Brookline, Cambridge, Dedham, Lowell, Salem, and Somerville [ed note--another opened in Burlington after this writing], and it will focus mainly on vegan, organic foods along with coffee, tea, and smoothies.

Momo Masala Opens in Jamaica Plain

A new restaurant that features a type of dumpling found in South Asia has opened in Jamaica Plain.

Universal Hub is reporting (via a post within the Jamaica Plain Facebook group) that Momo Masala is now open in the Hyde Square section of JP, moving into the space on Perkins Street that had been home to The Haven until it moved to Amory Street. The menu for the new eatery offers a mix of Nepali and Indian food with a section dedicated to momos, though the menu also includes such options as mulligatawny soup, samosas, pakoras, chicken tikka masala, shrimp tikka saag, lamb curry, paneer korma, goat vindaloo, and vegetable biryani.
