Oda by B.U Bistro Opens in the Former Simpli Bar & Bites Space in Jamaica Plain

A few months ago, it was reported that a pair of cafes known for their coffee and cocktails might be opening a third location where a Jamaica Plain restaurant had been, and now we have learned that a different place has opened within the space.

According to a source, Oda by B.U Bistro is now open in the Forest Hills area of JP, taking over the former Simpli Bar & Bites space on Washington Street. The new spot is a cafe that offers pastries, coffee, and tea, and it opens where a third location of Pomona Cafe & Wine Bar had originally been in the works, with the hope being for it to join other locations in Swampscott and Winthrop, though those plans apparently never came to be.

The address for Oda by B.U Bistro is 3840 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02131.

Brassica Kitchen + Cafe in Jamaica Plain May Expand into the Former Dogwood Cafe Space

A tiny Jamaica Plain eatery that is a cafe by day and a restaurant by night could be getting a lot bigger, as it is eyeing the space next door that had been home to another dining and drinking spot until closing earlier this year.

According to an article from Universal Hub, Brassica Kitchen + Cafe in the Forest Hills section of JP is seeking approval to expand into the former Dogwood Cafe space next door. If it gets the green light, Brassica would end up having four dining rooms, two bars, and two patios, with seating for 126 inside and 43 more outside.

Brassica Kitchen + Cafe first opened in 2016, taking over the space where Fazenda Cafe had once been; the dining spot offers coffee, tea, and donuts during the day on Thursdays and Fridays and dinner and drinks Wednesday through Saturday evenings while also offering a brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.

The address for Brassica's current space is 3710 Washington Street while the former Dogwood Cafe space is at 3712 Washington Street. The website for Brassica is at https://www.brassicakitchen.com/

Bukhara Indian Bistro Space in Jamaica Plain's Forest Hills Neighborhood Is For Lease

An Indian restaurant that moved from one part of Jamaica Plain to another a few years ago appears to be shuttered.

According to an article from the Jamaica Plain News, Bukhara Indian Bistro in Forest Hills has a "For Lease" sign in the window, and the website for the Washington Street spot says that it is closed every day of the week while its online ordering is "temporarily closed." Bukhara had moved from Centre Street to Washington Street in 2019, with the place saying at the time that the original space was being remodeled and that it planned to move back to its Centre Street home once the renovations were complete, but a tweet from the Jamaica Plain News mentions that its old space is now home to a Chase Bank.

A popular spot for pizza, craft beers, and cocktails is shutting down.

According to a tweet from @jessekb, The Dogwood in the Forest Hills section of Jamaica Plain is getting ready to close, with the Washington Street spot posting the following on its website:

It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that after 27 years The Dogwood will be closing its doors for good January 14th, 2023. We are thankful for the continued patronage & support the community has offered through the years. To all our faithful & loyal Dogwood friends & family we thank you for the memories & look forward to having one more with you before we go to exchange the stories & memories this great establishment has offered us all. We hope to see you in these next few weeks.

No reason has been given for the closure, nor is it known what might move into its space.

The Dogwood has been known in part for its wood-fired pizzas named after trees (the Arnold Arboretum is within walking distance) along with fish and chips, chicken under a brick, steak tips, macaroni and cheese, and wings, and a rotating selection of local and regional beers, martinis, margaritas, sangria, and more.

Eugene O'Neill's in Jamaica Plain Is Reopening

An Irish pub in Jamaica Plain that closed several years ago only to announce a couple of years later that it would return is finally on the verge of reopening.

According to a post from Universal Hub, Eugene O'Neill's in the Forest Hills section of JP plans to open back up possibly as soon as May 12, returning to its original home on Washington Street. The pub, which closed in the fall of 2017 after being in business for approximately five years, indicated in 2019 that it hoped to return to its space, and it appeared that the pub might reopen around the end of 2020, but it never did open and very little info about its possible return was mentioned until recently.

The address for Eugene O'Neill's is 3700 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02130.

[June 29 update: Adam Gaffin of Universal Hub tells us that Eugene O'Neill's reopens today, with a Facebook post from the place confirming this.]

Confirmed: Eugene O'Neill's Plans to Return to Jamaica Plain

It appears that an Irish pub that closed a couple of years ago is coming back to its space, though details are few at this point in time.

According to a licensing board hearing page within the City of Boston website, Eugene O'Neill's has applied for a liquor license to operate at its former home on Washington Street in the Forest Hills section of JP. An earlier post from the Jamaica Plain Gazette also shows this, with both indicating that Melissa Hunt will be the manager; this is presumably the same person who is involved with Napper Tandy's, a group of Irish pubs with locations in Roslindale, Norwood, Millis, and Walpole, and which had been connected to the original Eugene O'Neill's. More information should be given in next week's hearing, so stay tuned for updates.

Eugene O'Neill's closed in the fall of 2017 after being in business for approximately five years.

The address for the Eugene O'Neill's space is 3700 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02130.

[July 31 update: A new post from the Jamaica Plain Gazette confirms that Eugene O'Neill's is indeed seeking to return to its old space in Forest Hills. (Thanks to Universal Hub for bringing this to our attention.)]

[November 24, 2020 update: According to a tweet from @jessekb, the exterior of Eugene O'Neill's is being worked on now, and the people working out front apparently said that the place could be opening in about a month.]

Bukhara Indian Bistro in Jamaica Plain Moving to New Space in Forest Hills

by Marc Hurwitz

An Indian restaurant in Jamaica Plain is moving to a new location nearby.

According to a Facebook post from Steve Garfield, Bukhara Indian Bistro on Centre Street is moving to Washington Street in Forest Hills on April 1, with Universal Hub stating that it will take over the space that had been home to Tonic until it closed in 2013 (a location of Grass Fed also took over the Tonic space but it shuttered in 2017). It is not yet know what might be going into the current location of Bukhara; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Universal Hub mentions that the space that Bukhara is moving to is two doors down from another Indian restaurant (Tikki Masala).

The address for Bukhara is currently 701 Centre Street, with its upcoming address being 3698 Washington Street.

[March 20 update: According to a comment within the Facebook thread above, Bukhara is apparently moving into the space in Forest Hills while the Centre Street space is being remodeled; the plan appears to be for the restaurant to move back to its current home once renovations are complete.]

Bar Orange to Open in the Forest Hills Section of Jamaica Plain

by Marc Hurwitz

A new restaurant and bar is coming to a space in Jamaica Plain that has been home to couple of other dining and drinking spots over the past several years, and a familiar name is behind the place.

The Jamaica Plain News is reporting that Bar Orange is planning to open in the Forest Hills section of JP (across from the T station), with the Washington Street spot moving into the space where a second location of Grass Fed had been, and before that, Tonic. The post says that the place will more of a restaurant than a bar, with dishes featuring locally-sourced ingredients, and local beers will be offered. Bob O'Guin of Common Ground in Allston and Arlington is behind Bar Orange, according to the article.

If all goes as planned, Bar Orange could be opening in April.

The address for this upcoming restaurant and bar in Forest Hills is: Bar Orange, 3698 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02130. Its Facebook page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/Bar-Orange-Jamaica-Plain-261848994341661

Eugene O'Neill's in Jamaica Plain Has Closed

A laid-back Irish pub and restaurant in Jamaica Plain has very quietly shut down.

According to a tweet from @john_godfrey, Eugene O'Neill's in the Forest Hills section of JP is no longer in business, with a sign out front showing that the space is now for lease. A Twitter reply from @02130News confirms its closure, saying that a person at Napper Tandy's in Roslindale (which is under the same ownership) mentioned that the dining and drinking spot has been closed since Saturday.

Eugene O'Neill's first opened its doors in September of 2012, moving into the space where Griffin's Cafe had once been. In addition to its connection with Napper Tandy's in Roslindale, it was also affiliated with other Napper Tandy's pubs in Norwood, Millis, and Walpole.

The address for this now-closed pub in Jamaica Plain was: Eugene O'Neill's, 3700 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02130. The website for the Napper Tandy's pubs can be found at http://nappertandyspubs.com/

Grass Fed Is Opening a Second Location in Jamaica Plain

Last year we reported that a burger bar in Jamaica Plain was looking to expand, and now we have learned that a second location will indeed be opening--and it won't be all that far from their original restaurant.

Eater Boston is reporting (via Jamaica Plain News) that Grass Fed on Centre Street is planning to open another location in the Forest Hills section of the neighborhood, taking over the space on Washington Street where Tonic had been before closing for good in 2013. The articles say that the new eatery will have an 18-foot bar along with restaurant seating inside, and an outdoor "beer garden" style patio will be set up in the back during the warmer months. If all goes as planned, the new Grass Fed could be opening in February of 2016.

The former Tonic space had also been looked at by The Wok in Wellesley last year, though those plans apparently fell through.

The address for the new location of Grass Fed in the Forest Hills area of JP is 3698 Washington Street, Jamaica Plain, MA, 02130. The restaurant's website can be found at http://www.grassfedjp.com/

[November 5 update: A new article in the Jamaica Plain News mentions that the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council's Public Service Committee has approved of Grass Fed's plans for a second location, including its requests for a liquor license and patio as well as a proposed closing time and delivery/takeout services; the next step is for the City of Boston to make a decision on the dining spot, with a meeting coming up on November 18.]

[March 23, 2016 update: Eater Boston states that the new Grass Fed in Forest Hills is now open.]
