Banyan to Take Over Hamersley's Bistro Space in Boston's South End

Last fall, we reported that one of Boston's best-known restaurants was closing, and that the people behind a nearby dining and drinking spot were taking over the space. Now we have learned a bit more about what kind of restaurant is coming to the spot.

According to a job post within the Craigslist site, The Gallows Group is opening a "neighborhood restaurant" in the South End (in the former Hamersley's Bistro space on Tremont Street) that will offer "contemporary Asian cuisine" and they are currently looking for a bar manager. As mentioned earlier, it appears that Phil Tang of the now-closed East by Northeast in Cambridge's Inman Square will be involved, which now makes sense because that restaurant had focused on modern Asian fare as well.

Once the new restaurant opens, it will join two other South End spots from The Gallows Group--The Gallows on Washington Street and Blackbird Doughnuts on Tremont Street.

The address for this new restaurant in Boston's South End is 553 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02116.

[March 31 update: According to a post within the jobs section of the BostonChefs.com site, the new restaurant moving into the former Hamersley's Bistro space will be called Banyan, and it is currently seeking both a bar manager and an entry-level manager.]

[June 23 update: A Facebook post from CBH Communications indicates that Banyan is hoping to open in early July.]

[July 18 update: Eater Boston mentions that Banyan officially opens at 5:00 PM today.]
