Outback Steakhouse Opens in Somerville's Assembly Row

Less than a month after closing one of its most popular Boston-area locations, a chain of Australian-themed restaurants has opened another outlet in a new development just outside of the city.

According to a press release from CBS Marketwatch, Outback Steakhouse opens today at Assembly Row in Somerville, with the new spot having a "Modern Australia" theme whose decor "mirrors the indigenous flora and fauna, adventure, geography and leisure of modern day Australia." The new location of Outback, which opens its doors at 11:00 AM, will give a portion of today's sales to Best Buddies, a local nonprofit organization that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the world.

As mentioned here earlier, Outback closed its Burlington location at the end of June after being in business for nearly 20 years.

The address for the new location of Outback Steakhouse at Assembly Row is 340 Canal Street, Somerville, MA, 02145. The website for the chain can be found at

With all of the amazing food all across Somerville and Cambridge, I'm surprised the management company at Assembly Row decided to go with such a large chain. The area is full of discerning restaurant consumers for whom Outback Steakhouse will assuredly fall short. I think this was a bad bet.
