KO Pies at the Shipyard in East Boston Is Being Sold

More than two years ago, it was reported that the future of a beloved East Boston restaurant might close down or be sold at some point, and now we have learned that the end could now be in sight.

According to an article from boston.com, KO Pies at the Shipyard in East Boston is going to be sold, with the lease being up at the end of the year and owner Sam Jackson saying that he is heading back to his native Australia. The post indicates that any prospective buyer has two options--to take over the KO concept (including all the recipes and "all the secrets" Jackson has "around the meat pie world") or to purchase and beer and wine license and open a different concept within the space. (Jackson says that he is "comfortable either way.")

The original KO Catering & Pies in South Boston first opened in 2010, with that location closing in 2018; the East Boston outlet debuted in 2012 and is currently open for takeout and delivery, with the patio expected to reopen in March.

KO Pies at the Shipyard in East Boston Will Apparently Remain Open for Now

Last year, it was reported that a beloved East Boston restaurant had an uncertain future, as it was considering shutting down or being sold around the end of this year. Now we have learned that the dining spot may end up sticking around for at least a little while longer.

Eater Boston mentions (via a Facebook post from the place) that KO Pies at the Shipyard in East Boston has renewed its beer and wine license, allowing the place to remain open through 2020. The Facebook post gives a bit of information on the current situation, saying that "We'll be back at it in 2020 slinging more meat pies, beer, cider and wine down in the yard. Its been 10 cracking years in Boston and we're pumped to do it all again." The note also says that owner Sam Jackson and the crew will be taking nearly a month off for the holidays and that its last day before the break is December 22. In the fall of 2018, it appeared that there were three possible scenarios that could take place for KO Pies in East Boston--the business could be sold to a new owner who could then open a different restaurant in its space; the dining spot stays open until its lease runs out at the end of 2019, at which point its beer and wine license is sold; or a new owner buys the place and continues to run it as KO Pies.

Bluestone Lane to Open Two Locations in Downtown Boston

Last year, it was learned that a New York-based group of Australian-style cafes and coffee shops would be expanding to the Boston area, with one location coming to Cambridge. Now we have learned that they will be expanding to downtown Boston as well.

According to a job post within the Craigslist site, Bluestone Lane is planning to open somewhere in the heart of the city, with a message sent to us by the business confirming that they will indeed be opening in the downtown area. As reported earlier, another shop is being planned for the former Crema Cafe space in Harvard Square [ed note--now open]. Bluestone Lane which debuted in New York City in 2013, includes both counter-service coffee shops with a limited menu and full-service cafes with "progressive cafe fare."

KO Catering & Pies in South Boston Is Closing; Building Has Been Sold

The original location of a pair of Australian pie spots is saying farewell.

According to a Facebook post from the business, KO Catering & Pies in South Boston is closing, with the note saying that "it is somewhat bittersweet to announce that we have sold our building on A street and will not be returning to our original home." The post indicates that the newer location at the shipyard in East Boston remains open and that catering is still available as well.

The South Boston location of KO Catering & Pies first opened in 2010, taking over the space where St. Alphonzo's Kitchen had been; the East Boston location opened its doors in 2012.

Update: Bluestone Lane Is Expanding to the Boston Area, Including an Outlet in Cambridge's Harvard Square

It looks like a New York-based group of Australian-style cafes will be making its way to Boston.

According to a post from prnewswire.com, Bluestone Lane is looking to expand to both Boston and Austin while doubling the number of locations from 30 to 60 across 10 cities over the next couple of years. The business, which debuted in New York City in 2013, includes both counter-service coffee shops with a limited menu and full-service cafes with "progressive cafe fare." (It is not yet known for sure which concept will come to Boston, though it appears that it could be the cafe concept.)

Outback Steakhouse in Norwood Has Closed

A chain of Australian-themed restaurants continues to close locations in the Greater Boston area, with the latest being one that was southwest of the city.

According to a source, Outback Steakhouse in Norwood is no longer in business, with a check on the company's website indicating that the Route 1 restaurant has been removed from its locations section. With the closing of the Norwood location and the closing of outlets in Burlington and Framingham over the past few years, Outback now only has four remaining locations left inside Route 495, including in Somerville, Peabody, Randolph, and Hanover.

Outback Steakhouse Opens in Somerville's Assembly Row

Less than a month after closing one of its most popular Boston-area locations, a chain of Australian-themed restaurants has opened another outlet in a new development just outside of the city.

According to a press release from CBS Marketwatch, Outback Steakhouse opens today at Assembly Row in Somerville, with the new spot having a "Modern Australia" theme whose decor "mirrors the indigenous flora and fauna, adventure, geography and leisure of modern day Australia." The new location of Outback, which opens its doors at 11:00 AM, will give a portion of today's sales to Best Buddies, a local nonprofit organization that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the world.

As mentioned here earlier, Outback closed its Burlington location at the end of June after being in business for nearly 20 years.

Outback Steakhouse in Burlington Has Closed

A popular Boston-area location of a chain of Australian-themed restaurants has closed, and this was currently the only outlet of the place located inside Route 128.

According to several sources (including a Twitter post from last night), the Burlington location of Outback Steakhouse shut its doors at the end of business hours yesterday. There had been rumors that the Cambridge Street dining spot would possibly be closing at some point, though nothing had been confirmed until recently. A handful of locations of Outback remain open in Eastern Massachusetts, including ones in Framingham, Norwood, Peabody, and Randolph, and a new outlet is planned for Assembly Row in Somerville as well.

The Burlington location of Outback had been open since the late 1990s, with the space previously being home to the Royal Hawaiian, a restaurant and bar that was known in part for its strong Polynesian drinks.

CuppaCoffee Is Opening in Boston's Back Bay

It looks like an "Australian-inspired" coffee shop that has a store in downtown Boston is expanding to another part of the city.

A few months after announcing that it is opening by the Ink Block complex in the South End [Ed Note--now open], it now appears that CuppaCoffee is planning to open in the Back Bay as well, according to an article from Eat Boston. It is not yet known where in the Back Bay CuppaCoffee will open, though a Craigslist job post indicates that it will debut sometime this summer.

[July 30 update: A Licensing Board page within the City of Boston website mentions that a Back Bay location of CuppaCoffee is coming to 699 Boylston Street, and that it will be a kiosk within a gym--possibly BFX Studio, which is in that building. It appears that this is the CuppaCoffee location that had been mentioned here earlier, as a Facebook post from the place mentions Boylston Street as the third location, though it is not known if meat pies will be offered at this spot; as soon as we find out more, we will post another update here. (The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, August 6.)]

[March 22, 2016 update: A message sent from CuppaCoffee indicates that the new shop in the Back Bay is hoping to open before Marathon Monday (April 18), and it will indeed be offering meat pies in addition to coffee.]

CuppaCoffee Is Opening in Boston's South End

An "Australian-inspired" coffee shop in the Haymarket area of downtown Boston is going to be opening a second branch, with this one being in a part of the South End that is undergoing extensive development.

The Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog is reporting that CuppaCoffee on Merrimac Street is planning to open within the new apartment building Troy Boston, which is located on Traveler Street by the Ink Block complex and the new Whole Foods market in the South End. A Twitter post from the coffee shop says that the new outlet hopes to open sometime in the second quarter of 2015.

[September 11 update: According to a new Twitter post from the place, CuppaCoffee has its grand opening on September 21.]

CuppaCoffee first opened near Haymarket in May of 2013, offering Australian meat pies along with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and more.

Cuppacoffee (a Coffee Shop with Australian Meat Pies) Is Opening in Boston

A new espresso bar is on its way to downtown Boston, and it will be serving meat pies along with coffee.

Eater Boston is reporting that Cuppacoffee is going to be opening at the site of the Mobil gas station across from the Haymarket T stop (on Merrimac Street). The article states that the new spot will feature Australian meat pies as well as coffee from Hopkinton-based Red Barn Coffee Roasters, and it will make espresso using its own blend of beans. A check on Cuppacoffee's website shows that the shop will be run by Todd Moore and his wife Michelle, with Todd mentioning that he comes from Sydney, Australia.

This will not be the first spot in Boston to feature Australian meat pies; a pair of such places (KO Catering and Pies in South Boston and KO Pies at the Shipyard in East Boston) opened in 2010 and 2012, respectively.

Update: KO Catering and Pies Is Opening KO Pies at the Shipyard in Former Scup's Space in East Boston

A rumor that we heard awhile back has come true, as a South Boston takeout spot that features Australian fare is going to opening a second place in East Boston, with this one being a full-service restaurant that takes over the space where an eclectic eatery used to be.

According to Eater Boston, KO Catering and Pies is planning to open a new dining spot--tentatively called KO Pies at the Shipyard --in the former Scup's in the Harbour space within the Boston Harbor Shipyard (the people behind Scup's closed the place last year because of health-related issues). The article mentions that the new restaurant will have a capacity of 30 inside, with room for another 40 on an outdoor patio during the warmer months, and it will feature meat pies as well as sandwiches and local seafood, along with beer and wine.

Expect the new eatery from the KO people to open sometime between mid-April and May.

[June 6 update: KO Pies at the Shipyard is one step closer to opening in East Boston, as EveryBlock Boston has posted that the upcoming spot received a business license earlier this month.]

KO Catering and Pies in South Boston to Put Its Food Truck on the Road

An Australian takeout restaurant, retail food shop, and caterer in South Boston that opened last fall is going to be launching a food truck.

According to information within their website, it appears that KO Catering and Pies on A Street will apparently be getting its food truck up and running soon, and once it is on the road, folks will be able to find its location via the KO Twitter page. The new truck will offer a number of items on its menu, including meat pies, veggie pies, chicken schnitzel burgers, fish and chips, sausage rolls, grilled fish sandwiches, sweet corn fritters, and Aussie-style granola. Prices for nearly all items will be under $10.

KO Catering and Pies Opening in South Boston

A takeout spot and food truck featuring Australian fare is going to be opening in South Boston, moving into the space where a recently-closed restaurant had been.

According to their Twitter page, KO Catering and Pies will open on A Street (just north of W Broadway) in the spot where St. Alphonzo's Kitchen used to be until closing over the summer. The Twitter page mentions that KO Catering and Pies will be a "takeaway shop" offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu will feature such items as meat pies, veggie pies, sausage rolls, chickpea salads, spicy shrimp, and lemon slice.

A note from KO Catering and Pies mentions that the food truck will be mobile, and it will be launched once the retail shop opens.
