A little more than half a year after we wrote about a diner planning to reopen in Peabody, it turns out that a popular eatery in Salem may be opening a new restaurant in the spot.
According to The Salem News, Red's Sandwich Shop in downtown Salem is looking at the space on Route 1 in Peabody where the Bel-Aire Diner used to be. Originally, it had looked as though the Bel-Aire Diner may reopen as part of a truck stop, but now The Salem News writes that Red's is hoping to open a new restaurant there called Red's Kitchen and Tavern. The article mentions that if Red's gains approval from the city of Peabody, the new spot could be open toward the end of the year or in early 2011.
[August 31 update: According to The Salem News, Red's has gained approval from the Peabody City Council for their new restaurant on Route 1. The new spot could be open by early next year.]
[May 29, 2012 update: According to a Craigslist job post, the new Red's in Peabody is now open.]
The original Red's Sandwich Shop has been located on Central Street in Salem since the 1940s, serving breakfast and lunch items such as omelets, pancakes, waffles, French toast, sandwiches, steak tips, turkey and roast beef dinners, and pasta dishes. The restaurant was reviewed a couple of years ago on our sister site (Boston's Hidden Restaurants) as part of a food-based road trip. The review can be found here:

If all goes as planned, the new Red's Kitchen and Tavern will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and will apparently be part of a complex not unlike the one we mentioned several months back, with overnight parking for commercial trucks as well as a convenience store and motorcycle shop, according to The Salem News.
The address for this planned restaurant in Peabody will be: Red's Kitchen and Tavern, 131 Newbury Street, Peabody, MA, 01960.
Thanks to North Shore Dish for bringing this to our attention.
