City of Boston Suspends the Use of Beer Towers in Restaurants and Bars

The use of large, portable beer taps in Boston restaurants and bars has come to an end for now, and businesses looking to provide them in the future will need to get permission from the city.

According to Boston.com, city licensing officials have decided to suspend the use of beer towers, which have become increasingly popular over the years in Boston-area watering holes. The article mentions that the city will now require restaurants and bars to get permission from the licensing board to use them, with the board looking at each request individually.

Earlier this month, Tavern in the Square in Allston and Roggie's in Brighton were cited by Boston police for supplying beer towers without approval from the city, according to the Globe (and first mentioned in the Allston/Brighton TAB and Wicked Local). The report also says that the eating and drinking establishments were cited for selling more than two drinks at once to individuals (via the beer towers), which violates Massachusetts law.
