Wegmans Market Is Planning to Open Somewhere in Boston

A chain of grocery stores that recently opened its first location in Massachusetts--and is planning to open at least two more markets in the Boston area--is now looking at Boston itself.

The Boston Globe is reporting that the chief executive of Rochester-based Wegmans Food Markets is looking at several properties within the Boston city limits, stating that "We believe we belong in Boston, not just in the suburbs." No specific sites were mentioned, though the Globe speculates that any Wegmans that does open in the city would probably be similar to the model for the upcoming Chestnut Hill store, which will be approximately half the size of their typical markets (about 70,000 square feet). Wegmans also has a Burlington store in the works, with that one being more of a full-sized location.

[March 29 update: The Boston Globe is reporting that Wegmans is looking at locations in the Fenway and the South End, with the latter being the former Boston Herald site near the Southeast Expressway.]

The first Wegmans in the state opened in Northborough last October.
