According to a post on its website, UpStairs on the Square on Winthrop Street will be shutting its doors forever on New Year's Eve after more than 30 years in business, with The Restaurant Hub blog of The Boston Globe stating that the reason for its closure is due to the landlord selling the building. The website post mentions that the New American dining spot in Harvard Square will have a "grand finale" celebration that night, with early and late seatings as well as live music and dancing.
UpStairs on the Square first opened in 1982 on Holyoke Street, where it was originally called UpStairs at the Pudding. The Boston Business Journal mentions that it moved to its present home on Winthrop Street approximately 11 years ago.
Other well-known Boston-area eateries have closed over the past few months, including Anthony's Pier 4 along the waterfront and the Hilltop Steak House in Saugus.
The address for UpStairs on the Square is 91 Winthrop Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138.
