Brighton Bodega Is Opening in Former Mandy and Joe's Space in Brighton

It looks like a local restaurant group will be opening a new dining spot in the space where another eatery had been for nearly 70 years until closing awhile back.

According to a licensing board page within the City of Boston website, a restaurant tentatively called The Puritan is planning to open in Brighton, taking over the former Mandy and Joe's space on Washington Street. The manager of the proposed spot is Thomas Devlin of Superior Dining Group, which operates such places as Devlin's, Orleans, Warren Tavern, Barlow's, and other Boston-area dining and drinking spots. (An earlier article from the Allston-Brighton TAB confirms that Devlin's group has indeed purchased the space.)

It is not yet known what type of restaurant the new spot might be, nor is there an estimated opening date; as soon as we find out more, we will post an update here.

Mandy and Joe's, which closed in March of 2015, had been in business since 1948.

The address for this proposed restaurant is 328 Washington Street, Brighton, MA, 02135.

[September 15 update: A new licensing board hearing notice sent to us by a source indicates that the city of Boston will look into The Puritan's request for a food/liquor license to operate in the former Mandy and Joe's space, with the notice saying that there would be a bar on the first floor and a dining area in the basement. (The hearing will take place on Wednesday, September 23.)]

[June 22, 2016 update: A more recent licensing board page indicates that the new restaurant coming to the old Mandy and Joe's space is now planning to call itself Brighton Bodega instead of The Puritan.]

[June 27, 2017 update: According to a couple of sources, Brighton Bodega is now open.]
