The Brockton Enterprise is reporting that Sunset Cafe in the Campello neighborhood of Brockton was hit by a two-alarm blaze that appears to have started in its basement. The fire, which began around 7:00 PM Thursday evening, went up through the walls of the Main Street structure, causing damage not just to the dining spot, but to businesses adjacent to the place in the form of smoke damage. A firefighter who was injured in a fall while fighting the blaze was treated at the scene and remained at the site; this was the only injury that was reported, according to the article.
Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter, who has been to Sunset Cafe at least 50 times, says of the fire, "We are rebuilding the city's economy around small businesses like this....I know how hard [the Cruz family, who owned it] have worked to build this....This is a classic Brockton family-owned business. To see this happen to them is just heart-breaking."
It is not yet known how long it might take to rebuild Sunset Cafe; as soon as we get more information, we will post an update here.
The address for Sunset Cafe is 1110 Main Street, Brockton, MA, 02301.
