American Provisions in South Boston to Open New Shop in Dorchester

An artisanal "farm-to-table" grocery store in South Boston is going to be joined by a second shop in another neighborhood of the city.

Boston Magazine is reporting that American Provisions has gotten approval from the city of Boston to open in an upcoming development on Dorchester Avenue in the Ashmont section of Dorchester. Based on an earlier article in the Dorchester Reporter, plans had been in the works for the new shop for awhile, though co-owners Matt Thayer and Andy Fadous told Boston Magazine that they were trying to keep quiet about it until they got the green light from the city.

The new shop in Dorchester, which hopes to open this summer, will have approximately 1,500 square feet of retail space, with cheeses, charcuterie, and local and specialty products offered, and unlike the South Boston store, this one will have a full kitchen which will allow it to offer more in the way of prepared foods. The owners also plan to acquire a beer and wine license at some point, according to Boston Magazine.

The original location of American Provisions can be found at 613 E. Broadway in South Boston. Its website is at http://americanprovisions.com/

[March 17 update: The new location of American Provisions in Dorchester could be one step closer to opening by next week, as a licensing hearing page indicates that its request for a common victualler license will be looked at by the city of Boston on Wednesday, March 22.]
