A downtown Boston restaurant that one of the region's best-known chefs opened a couple of years ago is closing.
According to a Facebook post from the place, Cultivar within the Ames Boston Hotel is shutting down, with the note from Chef/Owner Mary Dumont saying that "Due to a series of unforeseen events that have created the perfect storm, it is with a heavy heart we announce that today Cultivar will be closing its doors." The note goes on to say that "Emily [Mary's wife and co-owner of Cultivar] and I created a dream one day and began down the path that grew Cultivar. A place we love, filled with people we love, staffed by an incredible family of wonderful people," thanking their staff, the hotel, and their guests and "those who chose to make memories with us, and rest assured we are not finished making memories with you."
Mary and Emily French-Dumont opened Cultivar in the spring of 2017, with the place featuring dry-aged meats, sustainable seafood, ingredients found in the wild, and vegetables grown in a hydroponic garden. Mary Dumont had formerly been the chef at Harvest in Cambridge's Harvard Square and she also appeared on the Food Network's Iron Chef America while Food and Wine magazine awarded her "best new chef" in 2006. (In addition, Cultivar's former Chef De Cuisine Brian Young has been in the spotlight of late, as he is on this season's "Top Chef.")
