The Derby Restaurant Is Replacing Tavern in the Square in Salem

by Marc Hurwitz

The people behind a local group of dining and drinking spots will be replacing a now-closed location with a restaurant with a new name and various upgrades.

According to a source, the former Tavern in the Square in Salem is expected to become home to The Derby Restaurant in March, with a Salem News article saying that indicating that the new spot will have more of a "local feel." The restaurant's president--Giuseppe "Joey" Arcari--says in the post that "We're going to refocus on the local side of things....I think we got away with that with the Tavern." Expect to see new lighting, furniture, and TVs at The Derby Restaurant along with a new menu and a new patio, and there will also be a couple of new managing partners (one of whom will also be a new head chef).

Tavern in the Square closed its Salem location in November following the closures of its two Cambridge restaurants the previous year; its Allston location was completely renovated and rebranded as "Tavern Allston" last year as well, while existing locations remain in operation Boston's North Station and South Station, along with Burlington, Littleton, Lowell, Northborough, Shrewsbury, and Cranston, RI.

The address for The Derby Restaurant (and former Tavern in the Square) is 189 Washington Street, Salem, MA, 01970.

[February 27 update: A Craigslist job post indicates that The Derby is close to debuting, saying that it is getting ready to open and is hiring for all positions. The post also says that the place will be a "community oriented restaurant with a scratch kitchen with a focus on local craft beer and exemplary cocktails."]

[March 26 update: According to its Facebook page, The Derby is now open.]
