Some Restaurants in Massachusetts Given Delay in Paying Meals Taxes

It looks like small businesses in Massachusetts--including restaurants and bars--have gotten a bit of good news about state tax payments.

According to a Twitter post from @maryathanasia, Governor Charlie Baker announced this afternoon that he is going to postpone the deadlines for businesses that paid less than $150,000 in 2019 in "sales and meals or room occupancy taxes." For the immediate future, it appears that dining and drinking spots that come under that limit will not have to pay meals taxes due on March 20, with the deadline being pushed back to June 20 instead. The tweet mentions that this also applies to the April 20 due date, though May 20 is not mentioned (we will try to clarify this as soon as possible).

The postponement of the tax deadlines comes on the heels of an order yesterday where restaurants and bars in the state can only offer takeout and/or delivery due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
