Last spring, it was reported that one of Boston's classic old-school diners was looking at an uncertain future due to proposed new development. Now we have learned that the eatery is staring demolition in the face.
According to an article from Caught in Southie, a developer who is looking to build a mixed-use development at the site of Mul's Diner in South Boston has submitted an application to demolish the structure housing the West Broadway spot. The post indicates that the Boston Landmarks Commission (BLC) has received the application, which is apparently a demolition delay review; this indicates that the application will be looked at by the city of Boston before any actual demolition can take place.
In April of 2019, we reported that a developer was looking to purchase the Muls' Diner space and build a mixed-use residential complex at the site, though at the time, it appeared that Mul's could possibly remain in business even if the plans went through, with the diner perhaps moving its breakfast operations across the street to Amrheins which is under the same ownership. Amrheins, however, may be replaced by new development as well, as a sale had been under agreement as of last year.
Mul's Diner first opened its doors in 1955.
