A couple of months ago, it was reported that a chain of high-end cookware shops appeared to be heading toward bankruptcy. Now we have learned that it has become official, and with it, all of its Boston-area shops will be shutting down.
According to a tweet from @seracongi of WCVB Boston, Sur La Table has filed for bankruptcy and will be permanently closing stores in Boston (Copley Place), Burlington, Chestnut Hill, and Natick, with a check on the locations page for the company indicating that all four shops plans to shut down for good in August or September. Back in March, all of the Sur La Table stores across the country closed temporarily due to the coronavirus outbreak, and talk of a potential bankruptcy filing began the following month, including a possible sale of the business which still seems to be in the works, according to the tweet.
Sur La Table, which started out in 1972 at Pike Place Market in Seattle, was also known for its cooking classes in addition to its variety of cooking equipment sold in its stores. The website for the business can be found at https://www.surlatable.com/
