A damaged structure in the western suburbs of Boston that had been home to four restaurants--including a longtime diner--may be torn down and replaced by a new building.
According to an article from Wicked Local, the now-unoccupied property on Trapelo Road in Belmont that had been home to Andros Diner, Sweet Peach Diner, Phinix Grill, and Tropical Diner could become the site of a 2.5-story building with restaurant space on the first floor, while the rest of the space would be used for two two-bedroom apartments. The post says that the Zoning Board of Appeals has approved of five special permits (with conditions) for the structure, with one of the next steps being for the project to comply with Belmont's stormwater management and erosion control bylaw. If all goes well, construction could begin within the next three months, though there are not yet any tenants for either the restaurant space or the apartment units.
Last October, a fire caused major damage to the building, and Tropical Diner--which resided in the structure at the time--never ended up reopening; Phinix Grill had been in the space before Tropical Diner, and before that, Sweet Peach Diner and Andros Diner, the last of which had resided in the space for more than 30 years.
