A new cafe has opened in Cambridge, and it gets its name from a person made famous by using his body as a unit of measurement for a bridge over the Charles River.
According to a Facebook post from owner Alex Tannenbaum, The Smoot Standard is now open in Cambridge, moving into a space on Massachusetts Avenue between Central Square and MIT that an earlier article from Cambridge Day said had been home to a location of Darwin's. The eatery, which is currently open for breakfast and lunch, is named after Oliver Smoot who, when an undergrad at MIT back in the 1950s, was used as a way to measure the length of the Massachusetts Avenue bridge between Cambridge and Boston.
In addition to The Smoot Standard, Tannenbaum also runs Naco Taco and Lily P's, both of which are in Cambridge.
The address for The Smoot Standard is 313 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139. Its Instagram page is at https://www.instagram.com/smootstd/
