Cafe du Pays in Cambridge Now Has a "Lounge/Salon/Living Room"

A French-Canadian restaurant in Cambridge that opened a couple of years ago has converted one of its rooms into a space that focuses more on drinks and lighter meals.

According to an email, the front room, or lower dining room at Cafe du Pays in Kendall Square is now a lounge, salon, and "living room," with the space being geared toward patrons who don't want the full "sit down dinner" experience, though the full menu is available along with some specific food items just for that space. We have been told that the people behind the restaurant have not yet decided on a name for the space, though they mainly call it Salon or the Lounge for now.

Cafe du Pays took over the former Hungry Mother space in July of 2017, with the team behind Hungry Mother and the nearby State Park, and Mamaleh's (minus owner Barry Maiden) being behind the place.

Cafe du Pays Is Opening in Former Hungry Mother Space in Cambridge's Kendall Square

A couple of years ago, an award-winning Cambridge restaurant shut down and plans for a new spot to open in the space were mentioned at the time. Now we have learned a bit more about what will be moving in.

Eater Boston is reporting that Cafe du Pays is planning to open in the former Hungry Mother space on Cardinal Medeiros Avenue, with an Instagram page for the spot describing it as a "French-Canadian Kitchen." Very little information on the restaurant has been given as of yet, but as EB mentions, French-Canadian fare typically includes such items as pea soup, poutine, and meat pies. (As soon as we find out more about Cafe du Pays, we will post an update here.)

Hungry Mother shut down in July of 2015, with owner Barry Maiden leaving the restaurant to pursue other projects while his team continued on with State Park, Mamaleh's, and The Bar by the Elevator, all of which are in Kendall Square (and the last of which opened this week).

[June 6 update: Boston Magazine states that Cafe du Pays hopes to open in July and that it will include French-Canadian fare and New England seafood options, with small plates and a couple of entree-sized dishes being the plan. The bar program is expected to include French spirits, drinks made with maple syrup and sea salt, French wines, and beers that come from Quebec and northern New England. The article also mentions that Daniel Amighi of La Brasa in Somerville will be heading up the kitchen.]
