News Elsewhere: Le Grenier on Martha's Vineyard Is Closing

A French restaurant on Martha's Vineyard is going to be closing its doors after more than 35 years in business.

The Martha's Vineyard Times is reporting that Le Grenier in Vineyard Haven will shut down on October 12, as chef/owner Jean Dupon is planning to retire from the business. The article says that Dupon is selling the Main Street building to Steve Bowen, who owns Waterside and The Blue Canoe in Vineyard Haven as well as Parkside Market in Falmouth, with Bowen planning on opening an Italian restaurant called La Soffitta in the space.

According to the article, Dupon is also closing Le Cave, which is a bistro downstairs from Le Grenier; that eatery will be shuttering on September 8.

Le Grenier first opened in 1978, with Dupon opening a French bakery downstairs called La Patisserie Francaise a few years later (it closed in 1992). He had also ran Le Bellecour in Lexington back in the 1970s.

The address for this soon-to-close restaurant on Martha's Vineyard is: Le Grenier, 96 Main Street, Vineyard Haven, MA, 02568.

Chilmark Tavern to Open on Martha's Vineyard

A new restaurant is coming to Martha's Vineyard later this month, and the person opening the dining spot is a familiar name within the Boston restaurant scene. According to an email from Chris Lyons Communications, the chef and owner of Chez Henri in Cambridge--Paul O'Connell--plans to open Chilmark Tavern in the little town of Chilmark on the west side of Martha's Vineyard. The restaurant will feature a regional menu with locally-grown foods used. Because Chilmark is a dry town, the dining spot will be BYOB.

The address for this new restaurant will be: Chilmark Tavern, 9 State Road, Chilmark, MA 02535.
