Barrett's Alehouse Is Opening in The Charlie Horse Space in West Bridgewater

A trio of restaurants and bars south of Boston is going to be joined by a fourth, and it will be taking over the space where an iconic sports bar and entertainment spot had been.

According to an article in The Enterprise, Barrett's Alehouse is planning to open in the former Charlie Horse Space in West Bridgewater, with the post saying that owner Mike Barrett is the brother of Charlie Horse co-owner Mary Barrett-Costello. The article says that major renovations will be done to the West Center Street space, including the bowling alley and stage for live music both being removed, a function room being added, and the dance floor being moved.

Once it opens, the new location of  Barrett's will join others in Bridgewater, North Attleboro, and Fall River, along with two other spots run by Mike Barrett--Castaways Bar and Grille in Bridgewater and Fireside Grille in Middleboro. If all goes as planned, the new spot could be opening within the next six months.

The Charlie Horse closed this summer after approximately 25 years in business; its other location in Kingston remains open.

The address for the new location of Barrett's Alehouse is 674 West Center Street, West Bridgewater, MA, 02379. The website for the other locations of Barrett's can be found at http://barrettsalehouse.com/

[June 21, 2017 update: The Taunton Gazette says that Barrett's Alehouse is now open in the former Charlie Horse space in West Bridgewater.]

The Charlie Horse in West Bridgewater Has Closed

An iconic sports bar and entertainment spot south of Boston has shut down.

According to a couple of sources, The Charlie Horse in West Bridgewater closed for good after business hours last night, with The Enterprise stating that declining business and having a space that was simply too large were the reasons for the closure. The article indicates that the other location of The Charlie Horse in Kingston remains open, and that workers at the West Bridgewater spot will be given a chance to continue on at that outlet along with other places owned by the people behind it, including the Abington Ale House in Abington, The Tirrell Room function space in Quincy, and Jones River Trading Co. caterers in Kingston.

The West Bridgewater location of The Charlie Horse first opened approximately 25 years ago.

The address for the now-closed Charlie Horse in West Bridgewater was 674 West Center Street, West Bridgewater, MA, 02379.

[August 3 update: A new article from The Enterprise confirms that The Charlie Horse closed because the cost of running the dining and drinking spot in such a large space was no longer economically feasible, with one of the owners saying that "We just couldn't afford to stay there."]

Christo's Alum to Open Niko in West Bridgewater

A year and a half after an iconic Greek restaurant south of Boston closed its doors for good, one of its longtime workers is partnering with a friend to open up a brand new Greek dining spot.

According to an article in The Enterprise, Peter Badavas is teaming up with executive chef David Casey to open Niko in West Bridgewater, with the North Main Street restaurant officially opening its doors on Thursday at 4:00 PM. The post says that the new eatery will having seating for 112 along with a 32-seat bar and a 40-person function room, and that it will feature Greek-American fare with a "modern twist."

Badavas, who worked at Christo's for 16 years, says in the article that his father was owner Christos Tsaganis' "right-hand man" and that he worked at the restaurant until its closing in December of 2013. David Casey, who will be heading up the kitchen at Niko, took part in a January episode of the Food Network reality show "Guy's Grocery Games," which is hosted by TV celebrity Guy Fieri.

The family behind the now-closed Christo's also opened a takeout spot in Whitman called Christo's to Go! last October; there had been talk of the family opening a smaller restaurant as well, though no news has come out about that of late (and it is not known if Niko is the spot that they had been talking about).

The address for this new Greek restaurant in West Bridgewater is: Niko, 275 North Main Street, West Bridgewater, MA, 02379. Its Facebook page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Niko-Bar-Grill/755217954596384

Thanks to a source for initially letting us know about this.

Montreal French Fries in West Bridgewater Closes

A roadside restaurant south of Boston that was known for its Quebec-style poutine has apparently closed its doors. According to posters on both Yelp and Chowhound, Montreal French Fries in West Bridgewater is no longer in business. A check on the restaurant's website shows that it is no longer running, and its phone is no longer in service.

Montreal French Fries was a snack shack located on Route 106 (just west of the Route 24 intersection) that featured hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as poutine, which is a plate of French fries covered in dark gravy and cheese curds. Corn dogs were also served at the dining spot, and the burgers could be ordered with Montreal spice.

There is no information at the present time about what, if anything, might move into the spot where Montreal French Fries used to be. [November 29 update: It does look like a new restaurant is going into the old Montreal French Fries spot. Also, an earlier note on the restaurant's website (which is now down) indicated that the owner of Montreal French Fries may be behind the new place. We will continue to post updates as we get them, so keep checking back.]
