Certified Meatball Company in South Boston Has Closed; New Concept Apparently on the Way

by Marc Hurwitz

A restaurant that focused on a popular food item has shut down, and it appears that a new concept from the group behind the spot will be replacing it.

According to several sources over the past couple of days, Certified Meatball Company in South Boston has closed, and we were able to confirm this today, being told that a new dining spot will apparently move into the W Broadway space, possibly in approximately ten weeks or so. The dining spot, which first opened last August, offered a variety of meatballs and sauce options along with soups, salads, and side dishes.

The company behind Certified Meatball Company is Boston Nightlife Ventures, which runs Griddler's, Southern Kin Cookhouse, and Wink & Nod.

The address for the now-closed Certified Meatball Company (and upcoming new restaurant) is 429 West Broadway, South Boston, MA, 02127.

Certified Meatball Company Opens in South Boston This Summer

A long-awaited restaurant featuring meatballs is finally getting ready to open.

According to a job post within the Craigslist site, Certified Meatball Company is hoping to open in South Boston later this month and is going to be doing job training on June 12. Based on information we received earlier, it looks like the upcoming dining spot on West Broadway plans to offer a variety of meatballs and sauce options, including beef, spicy Korean pork, turkey, Moroccan lamb meatballs, and veggie, with sauce options including a mole and a Thai green sauce.

In the spring of 2015, we mentioned that Certified Meatball Company was looking to open in Somerville's Davis Square, but those plans apparently fell through and a year later, it was discovered that the place would be opening in South Boston instead.

Boston Nightlife Ventures (Griddler's, The Tap Trailhouse, Southern Kin Cookhouse, Wink & Nod) is behind Certified Meatball Company.

The address for Certified Meatball Company is 429 West Broadway, South Boston, MA, 02127.

MeatBall Kitchen in Natick Has Apparently Closed

A pair of meatball spots appears to be back down to one location, as its shop in the western suburbs of Boston looks like it has closed after only a short time in business.

According to a source, MeatBall Kitchen at the Natick Mall in Natick is apparently no longer in operation, with a check on its website seeming to confirm this, as the site shows only the Wilbraham location now. A few posters on Yelp mention that the Natick eatery is shuttered as well, though no specific information on why it closed has been given.

MeatBall Kitchen first opened its Natick location last August, featuring a variety of meatballs along with soups, salads, and appetizers.

The website for the original shop in Wilbraham can be found at http://meatballkitchens.com/

MeatBall Kitchen to Open in Natick

A restaurant in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts that features a very popular food item is opening a second location closer to Boston.

According to a source, MeatBall Kitchen is opening at the Natick Mall in Natick, with a job posting within the Craigslist site confirming this. Once it opens, the new eatery will join another in Wilbraham, and based on the menu at that shop, expect to see a variety of meatballs offered (beef, pork, chicken, "classic," veggie, vegan, and gluten-free), along with soups, salads, appetizers, as well as special meatballs of the day.

MeatBall Kitchen is run by The Federal Restaurant Group, which also operates The Federal Restaurant and Bar in Agawam and Vinted Wine Bar and Kitchen in West Hartford, CT.

Certified Meatball Company to Open in South Boston

Last spring, we had reported that a local restaurant group was planning to open a meatball-focused spot to the Boston area. Now we have learned that the place has found a home a few miles away from where it had originally planned to open.

Eater Boston mentions that Boston Nightlife Ventures (BNV) will be opening the Certified Meatball Company in South Boston this summer, taking over the space on West Broadway where Windmill Food Factory had been. In April of 2015, it looked like the meatball place would open in the former Dragon Garden space in Somerville's Davis Square, but by August it was apparent that the spot would be opening elsewhere, as a "For Lease" sign had gone up at the site. According to the BNV site, the Certified Meatball Company will focus on "globally inspired meatballs" inspired by "nostalgic memories of top quality food & produce found in the local butcher shops of our youth."

Currently, Boston Nightlife Ventures runs Griddler's, The Tap Trailhouse, and Wink & Nod, and it will also be opening Southern Kin at Somerville's Assembly Row and Little Owl Tavern at an as-of-yet undisclosed location.

The address for the upcoming Certified Meatball Company is 429 West Broadway, South Boston, MA, 02127. The website for BNV can be found at http://boston-nightlife-ventures.com/

[July 5 update: According to a Facebook post from the place, construction is now underway at Certified Meatball Company, and it hopes to open sometime this fall.]
