Wegmans Market Is Opening in Northborough

A supermarket that has been hoping to open in Westwood for awhile is now planning to bring a store to Northborough.

According to the Progressive Grocer, Wegmans is looking to open at the upcoming Northborough Crossing, which will be located at the intersections of Route 9 and 20 in this Metrowest town. The article mentions that the new Wegmans, which will be the first to open in New England, may also contain a restaurant within it. Both the market and the development could be open by next fall.

While Wegmans has also been trying to open a market in Westwood for more than two years, the Westwood Station development has been stalled for awhile now, and it is not known when, or if, the market (and the development) might be built. The Progressive Grocer article does state that the company is looking to open several more Wegmans in Massachusetts over the coming years.

Wegmans first started out as a fruit and vegetable company in Rochester, NY, during World War I. The supermarket chain has slowly expanded, with about 75 locations open today in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Their website can be found at: http://www.wegmans.com/

[October 11, 2011 update: According to their Facebook page, the new Wegmans in Northborough is opening on Sunday, October 16.]
