A boutique hotel on Commonwealth Avenue in the Kenmore Square section of Boston will soon be losing an upscale lounge, but it will also be gaining a seafood restaurant a bit later in the year. According to Grub Street Boston and the Boston Globe, the Foundation Lounge, which is located within Hotel Commonwealth, is set to close on April 17, while the Island Creek Oyster Bar is planning on opening in the hotel toward the end of the summer.
[October 15 update: According to Devra First of the Boston Globe, the Island Creek Oyster Bar is now open.]
The Foundation Lounge first opened in 2005, offering patrons appetizers and lighter fare (including sushi, shumai, and beef tartare) as well as a variety of drink options (martinis, sake, mojitos). The sleek dining spot and watering hole has also featured music from DJs, local artwork on display, and an outdoor patio.
The Island Creek Oyster Bar looks to feature food connected with The Island Creek Oysters Foundation in Duxbury, and according to the Boston Globe, it will be a collaborative effort between the founder of Island Creek Oysters, the owner of Eastern Standard (a restaurant also in Hotel Commonwealth), and the chef of Eastern Standard and Lineage in Brookline. The Globe mentions that the Island Creek Oyster Bar will move into the space where the seafood restaurant Great Bay resided for about six years until closing in 2009.
Hotel Commonwealth is located at 500 Commonwealth Avenue on the eastern edge of Kenmore Square.
