A long-closed discotheque on Route 2 in Cambridge is finally going to be torn down, and one last party will take place at the site in celebration of its demolition.
According to The Boston Globe, Faces Nightclub is slated to be taken down toward the end of August or early in September, with the developers of an apartment building that is going to be built there throwing a party complete with a tent and appetizers. The Faces building has been shuttered for more than 20 years, with the infamous dance club closing sometime around 1990. Before it was Faces, the spot was home to a club called The Empire Room, according to an earlier article within the Cambridge Day site.
[October 18 update: Grub Street Boston heard from sources that the former Faces building may be taken down today and mentioned that a food truck was apparently out front and open for business. While a check on the site at about 12:15 PM today indicated while there was no food truck, a small work crew was out back and a large construction truck was off to the side, so perhaps the building will indeed be taken down shortly.]
[October 19 update: According to The Boston Globe, the Faces sign will come down today, with the demolition of the actual building starting in a couple of weeks. The article mentions that there will be a small, invitation-only ceremony for the taking down of the sign, which will happen at around 11:30 AM. (There is no word on whether a party will take place during the demolition of the building.)]
The address for the old Faces space is 223 Concord Turnpike Cambridge, MA 02140.
