Casablanca in Cambridge's Harvard Square Is Closing

Last fall, we reported that a landmark restaurant in the Harvard Square section of Cambridge was going up for sale, and now we have learned that the dining spot is going to be closing its doors.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Casablanca on Brattle Street will be shutting down at the end of August, with owner Sari Abul-Jubein stating that he is "ready to move on." According to the Globe, Abul-Jubein will be spending more time at Casbah (his other restaurant), which is in the Fresh Pond area of the city, with the eatery being changed to a BBQ spot called the Fat Man Cafe.

[July 11 update: According to a post within the Grub Street Boston site, a rumor is going around that Dante DeMagistris of dante in Cambridge and Il Casale in Belmont may be looking to take over the space where Casablanca is. We have been hearing the same rumor, though as Grub Street says (based on a chat with a rep for DeMagistris), there is nothing to confirm at this point in time.]

[July 12 update: The rumor about Dante DeMagistris' interest in the Casablanca space seems to be gaining more steam, as a veteran poster on the Chowhound site mentions today that the hostess at Harvest in Harvard Square said the owner of dante will indeed be taking over the space.]

[August 21 update: The Boston Herald has confirmed that Dante DeMagistris is indeed looking at the space where the soon-to-close Casablanca is, but no deal has been made as of yet, with DeMagistris saying that "We’re going through negotiations with the landlord....We’re looking at other places as well."]

[September 13 update: A post on the Casablanca Facebook page indicates that the restaurant is still open for business and will be through at least the end of September.]

[October 2 update: A new post on the Casablanca Facebook page mentions that the restaurant is still open and will remain so at least through the end of 2012.]

[December 26 update: According to one of our Twitter friends (and confirmed via the Brattle Theatre Twitter page), Casablanca has officially closed its doors forever. (It appears that their last night in operation was December 21.)]

Casablanca first opened as a bar in 1955, with the restaurant part of the business opening in 1977. It has featured a mix of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare over the years.

The address for this dining spot in Harvard Square is: Casablanca, 40 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA, 02138. The phone number is (617) 876-0999.
