A License Commission General Hearing page on the City of Cambridge website indicates that the owner of Spice & Rice on Cambridge Street has applied to transfer an all alcoholic beverages as a restaurant license to the manager of a restaurant that will be called Hit Wicket. The notice mentions that the new eatery is planning to be open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, and it will have a seating capacity of 95.
It is not yet known what kind of cuisine Hit Wicket will focus on, as the name does not give any indication (a hit wicket is a term used in the sport of cricket), and it is also not yet known when Spice & Rice will close. As soon as we receive more information, we will post an update here.
[February 22, 2013 update: One of our sources indicates that Spice & Rice has closed. (Phone calls to the place are now being routed to their other restaurant--Sugar & Spice in Porter Square.)]
[March 14, 2013 update: According to their blog, Hit Wicket will indeed be a cricket-themed restaurant with foods from countries that feature the sport (England, India, Australia, West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand). A post within the blog says that the eatery has begun renovations on the space, with Hit Wicket possibly opening in April or May. (The post mentions that they hope to be up and running during the 2013 season of the IPL [India Premier League], which takes place during the two months.)]
[June 11, 2013 update: Eater Boston says that Hit Wicket is in the process of soft-opening, with a couple of soft openings already in the books and more coming tomorrow and Thursday.]
[June 14, 2013 update: It looks like Hit Wicket officially opens today, as a post on their Facebook page says "Friday, June 14th onwards open at 11am."]
The address for Hit Wicket is 1172-1178 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA, 02139.
