Upper Crust Pizzeria Plans Is Replacing Stone Hearth Pizza in Cambridge

A local group of pizzerias that has had a checkered past may be opening a new location in Cambridge's Porter Square neighborhood, and it would apparently be taking over the space where a shrinking local group of pizzerias currently has a shop.

Eater Boston is reporting (via a licensing committee general hearing page) that Upper Crust Pizzeria is seeking a common victualer license to operate at 1782 Massachusetts Avenue, which is home to a location of Stone Hearth Pizza. If the city of Cambridge gives its approval, this would become the ninth location of Upper Crust, while--assuming this is a closure and not a move--there would be only two Stone Hearth locations remaining, one in Belmont and another in Allston. (Other locations of Stone Hearth in Hingham, Needham, and Winchester have closed.)

[August 20 update: A note sent from Rich O's Ravings indicates that Stone Hearth Pizza in Cambridge is now closed, and Upper Crust Pizzeria is indeed moving into the space.]

[February 28, 2016 update: Upper Crust is now open in the former Stone Hearth space in Cambridge.]

A number of Upper Crust locations shut down abruptly in late 2012 after the chain declared bankruptcy on the heels of allegations of labor law violations and misuse of company funds, with several shops subsequently being auctioned off. Some of the stores ended up reopening, and locations can currently be found in Beacon Hill, the South End, Brookline, Lexington, Watertown, Wellesley, Arlington, VA, and Beverly Hills, CA. UC Acquisition, which has ties to Upper Crust founder Jordan Tobins, appears to be behind all remaining locations of the pizzeria, with partner Steve Leese being listed on the hearing page as manager of the new location.

The address for the new Upper Crust Pizzeria is 1782 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02140.
