Caffe Nero Is Opening in Cambridge's Central Square

A chain of Italian-style coffee shops based in Europe is looking to open a new shop in Cambridge, moving into the space where a growing chain of burger spots had been hoping to open before those plans fell through.

A license commission general hearing agenda page within the City of Cambridge website indicates that Caffe Nero is seeking a license to operate on Mass. Ave. in Central Square, with the address indicating that this is the site that Denver-based Smashburger had been looking at in early 2014 before apparently deciding not to pursue the space shortly after the announcement that it had been seeking a common victualler license to open there.

If all goes as planned and Caffe Nero does open in Central Square, it would join other locations in Boston's Downtown Crossing (Millennium Place), the South End, Longwood, and Jamaica Plain, along with upcoming stores in Fort Point, Wellesley [ed note--both now open], and a second shop in Downtown Crossing at the Millennium Tower development.

The address for the new location of Caffe Nero in Central Square is 589 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA, 02139. The website for the chain can be found at http://www.caffenero.com/
