A new restaurant is on its way to South Boston, and it would be taking over the space where a Mexican eatery had been for nearly 20 years.
According to a licensing board page within the City of Boston website, a dining spot with the working name of Perkins Square Restaurant has applied for a liquor license to open in the former Salsa's space on Dorchester Street. The manager listed for the proposed spot is Michael Shaw, who is apparently the same Michael Shaw who is involved with Lincoln Tavern & Restaurant, Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, and Capo (all of which are located nearby on W Broadway), so it appears that this could be a fourth restaurant from that group.
Salsa's first opened in South Boston back in the late 1990s, while a second outlet of the place opened a decade later in Hingham (both locations closed in 2015).
The address for this new dining spot in South Boston is 118 Dorchester Street, South Boston, MA, 02127.
[January 11 update: Universal Hub states that the new restaurant will be an Asian restaurant and sushi spot and that Michael Shaw of Lincoln Tavern & Restaurant, Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, and Capo is indeed behind the place. (Shaw says the restaurant could open approximately 12 weeks after it gets the green light from the city.)]
[September 12 update: A Facebook post from Michael Shaw indicates that the upcoming restaurant in South Boston could be close to opening, as it is now hiring chefs for the place. (Thanks to Patrick Maguire of Maguire Promotions & Hospitality Consulting for bringing this to our attention.)]
[November 20 update: According to Patrick Maguire, it looks like the new restaurant will be called "Fat Baby," with a website that's under construction seeming to confirm this. (The site will be at http://fatbabysouthboston.com/)
[November 30 update: An Instagram post from Caught in Southie indicates that Fat Baby is currently having a soft opening, though no public opening date has been given as of yet.]
[December 1 update: Boston Magazine says that Fat Baby opens tomorrow (Saturday, December 2) and that it will offer such items as chicken banh mi bao, crab Rangoons wrapped taquito-style, noodle bowls, sushi, cocktails, and more.]
