Victoria's Diner Owners Taking Over Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe Space in Boston's South End

A couple of months ago, we reported that a legendary South End dining spot was papered over and it was not known what might happen to the place. Now we have learned that the people behind a Boston diner are taking over the space.

According to a source, Damian and Sheree Marciante of Victoria's Diner on Mass. Ave. have filed an LLC called Boston Diner Group whose principal address is 429 Columbus Avenue, which is the same address as that of the currently-closed Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe. A check on Bizapedia shows that this is indeed the case, while another search within the Suffolk Registry of Deeds shows the same information via a lease notice. Neither our tipster nor the sources here mention whether the Charlie's name will be kept, and it is not known what changes might be coming to the space, so stay tuned.

A few weeks ago, we heard chatter that the Victoria's owners might be taking over the Charlie's space, but were unable to confirm this information at the time.

Charlie's first opened in 1927, shutting down in the summer of 2014 before reopening under new ownership in early 2016. The diner is known in part for its turkey hash and is an institution of sorts, with Barack Obama, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Julia Child being just a few of its more famous visitors, according to an article in boston.com.

The address for Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe is 429 Columbus Avenue, Boston, MA, 02116.
