Volo Craft Pizza Opens in Swampscott; Offers Detroit-Style Pizza

A new pizzeria has come to the North Shore, and it offers a type of pizza that apparently cannot be found at any other independent dining spot in the Greater Boston area.

According to its website, Volo Craft Pizza opened in Swampscott last month, with the Humphrey Street eatery offering salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes, and craft pizza (including white pizza)--and it is now offering Detroit-style pizza as well, with the two options being classic cheese and pepperoni. Detroit-style pizza is a bit similar to Sicilian/bakery pizza while also having some similarities to Chicago-style deep dish, though the slices are square like the former while the crust tends to be crispier than Sicilian/bakery pizza and tends not to be as greasy.

It looks like the only other place in the Boston area that has Detroit-style pizza is from a chain (Little Caesars, which has locations in Roslindale, Everett, and Lynn).

The address for this new pizza shop in Swampscott is: Volo Craft Pizza, 152 Humphrey Street, Swampscott, MA, 01907. Its website can be found at http://volopizzeria.com

Thanks to a Facebook poster for initially bringing this to our attention.

[September 27 update: A source tells us that there is at least one other spot in the region that has Detroit-style pizza--Tapestry in Boston, which does not have it on the menu but it is considered a special available nightly. (Boston Magazine had mentioned back in March that the place was starting to offer the pizza there.)]
