Blackbird Doughnuts, Saloniki Opening in Smith Center in Cambridge's Harvard Square

by Marc Hurwitz

Over the past several months, we have reported that a few familiar names would be coming to a building in Cambridge that is currently undergoing a large-scale transformation. Now we have learned of two more--a donut shop and a Greek restaurant--that will be opening there as well.

According to an article in the Harvard Gazette, Blackbird Doughnuts and Saloniki are planning to open within Harvard University's Smith Campus Center on Mass. Ave., with the two joining such spots as Pavement Coffeehouse, Swissbakers, Bon Me, Whole Heart Provisions, and Oggi Gourmet, the last of which will be returning to the building. The post says that all of the eateries are expected to debut when the building opens early this fall.

Currently, Blackbird Doughnuts can be found in Boston's South End, while Saloniki can be found in the Fenway and by MIT in Cambridge. [Ed note--Blackbird now has a shop in the Fenway as well.]

[June 7 update: A bit more information has come out on the upcoming Saloniki within Harvard University's Smith Campus Center, including expected seating for 103 and total a capacity of 141, proposed hours being 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, and the possibility of having a full liquor license, with the city of Cambridge looking into their request for one last night.]

[September 4 update: A Twitter post indicates that Blackbird Doughnuts is now open at the Smith Campus Center.]

[September 20 update: Boston Magazine mentions that Saloniki is planning to open in the Smith Center on October 3, and it will be their flagship location with both counter service and dine-in service, a meze bar, cocktails, and more.]
