A Puerto Rican Bakery May Open in the Former Tremont Drug Space in Boston's South End

by Marc Hurwitz

A new bakery might be on its way to the South End of Boston, moving into the space where a longtime pharmacy had been.

According to a series of Twitter posts from @SouthEndHistSoc, a Puerto Rican bakery is planning to open on Tremont Street in the former Tremont Drug space, with the posts saying of the proposal, "There are letters of support given to the commission & read for the record: from residents in the neighborhood & staff in the mayor's office. They are particularly supportive of decorative elements: of the coqui frog and '2017' to remember the destruction of hurricane Maria in PR." @SouthEndHistSoc also goes on to tweet that "This is a long application. Parts of it have been approved with provisos, other parts have been denied, and other parts will need to be amended and the applicant will need to come back to a future meeting." Very little is currently known about the ownership of the proposed bakery or what kinds of food items the place might offer, so stay tuned for updates.

A post from mysouthend.com states that Tremont Drug was a neighborhood institution that had been around for decades; the store closed in early 2017.

The address for this proposed bakery in the South End is 610 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, 02118.
