Bertucci's Declares Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, Closes 6 Massachusetts Locations

by Marc Hurwitz

A local chain of Italian restaurants that has closed three Boston-area locations this year has declared bankruptcy.

According to a number of sources over the weekend, including an article in Bloomberg, Bertucci's has been getting ready to file for bankruptcy and was planning to have a buyer take over the company once the filing became official. A new post from Boston Magazine confirms that the business has indeed declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy, with the article saying that it "has been acquired in an asset purchase agreement, and will consider all bids for a sale or restructuring of the company." CEO Brian Wright says in a press release that the hope is for the filing to be "seamless" for diners, vendors, and trading partners and that it hopes to emerge from bankruptcy in a position for "significant future growth."

The Bertucci's chain, which is headquartered in Northborough and first started out in Somerville in 1981, has seen its locations in Faneuil Hall, Kenmore Square, and Wellesley shut down in 2018.

[April 17 update: MassLive mentions that six locations of Bertucci's in Massachusetts have closed in the wake of the bankruptcy filing, including three outlets in the eastern part of the state--Randolph, Taunton, and Wayland.]

[June 5 update: According to a press release, Earl Enterprises (Buca di Beppo, Planet Hollywood, Earl of Sandwich) has announced the purchase of Bertucci's, which will allow the chain to emerge from bankruptcy.]
