Double Zero Pizza to Expand to Boston

It looks like a celebrity chef will be bringing his New York-based vegan pizzeria to the Boston area.

According to an article from Eater Philadelphia, Double Zero is expanding to several cities (possibly later this year), including locations in Boston, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, with another in the works for Brooklyn as well. Based on the original East Village location of Double Zero, the Boston outlet could feature wood-fired pizzas made using nut-based cheeses.

Matthew Kenney, who is behind the place, is a two-time James Beard Award nominee who runs a number of meat- and dairy-free dining spots around the world and has also written cookbooks on plant-based foods.

[October 5 update: A licensing board hearing page from the City of Boston website indicates that Double Zero will be opening at 163 Newbury Street, which is between Dartmouth Street and Exeter Street in the Back Bay. The listing also indicates that it hopes to get a beer and wine license from Dumpling Kingdom in Allston.]

[November 21 update: A Zoning Board of Appeals page shows that a hearing is expected to take place on November 27 that looks into Double Zero's plans to operate in the Newbury Street space (and change its use to a restaurant), with the plan being to include an outdoor patio as well as a dining/takeout area inside.]

[June 30, 2021 update: According to a press release, Double Zero is opening its Boston location on Friday, July 9.]
