James Beard Award Winner Karen Akunowicz to Open Fox and the Knife in South Boston

by Marc Hurwitz

A couple of months ago, we reported that a local chef who was a recent James Beard award winner was planning to open her own restaurant. Now we have learned a bit more about the place.

According to a post from Food & Wine, Karen Akunowicz is opening Fox and the Knife in South Boston, with the place being an "Italian-inspired neighborhood enoteca" that the former Executive Chef/partner at Myers + Chang in Boston's South End says will be "just a warm, welcoming neighborhood joint." The article says that the 75-seat eatery will be an affordable spot that will hopefully be "something for everyone." It is not yet known exactly where Fox and the Knife will open--the post says it will be located in an old building where another restaurant had been--so stay tuned for updates as they come in.

Akunowicz, who also worked at such places as Ten Tables, the now-closed Via Matta, and Oleana won a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northeast in May.

Thanks to Caught in Southie for initially bringing this to our attention.

[August 7 update: The West Broadway Neighborhood Association Facebook group page confirms what we had heard from someone in the restaurant industry yesterday, that Fox and the Knife plans to open in the space on West Broadway where The Maiden had been until it closed this spring.]

[January 23 update: An email mentions that Fox and the Knife is slated to open on February 2.]
