Last summer, we reported that a South Boston institution looked liked it was going on the market, and now we have learned that a local real estate group is in the process of buying the space.
Caught in Southie is reporting (via The Real Reporter) that the Amrheins site on W Broadway is under agreement, with the Fort Point real estate group City Point Capital expected to pay as much as $18 million for the half-acre space. It is not yet known exactly what might become of the site, but The Real Reporter does mention that the restaurant is expected to remain in operation during the permitting process for construction, while also hinting that Amrheins could possibly live on in a new space somewhere in the area, though nothing has been confirmed on that front as of yet.
Amrheins, which first opened in 1890, is known in part for its hand-carved bar which is the oldest of its kind in the United States; the restaurant has also been known over the years as a place where local politicians tend to go.
The address for Amrheins is 80 West Broadway, South Boston, MA, 02127. Its website can be found at http://amrheinsboston.com/
Thanks to @chipsy231 for initially bringing this to our attention.
