Last winter, it was reported that a cafe focusing on those who love the outdoors could be coming to Malden. Now we have learned that this will apparently not be happening after all.
According to an article from Eater Boston, Heather Schmidt--who is one of the founders of Union Square Donuts--has decided not to go through with her plans to open Landsmith Cafe and Outdoor Adventure Clubhouse in Malden, saying that the project fell through "due to rising unexpected buildout costs that became insurmountable." Schmidt does want to keep the Landsmith concept alive, however, in one form or another, mentioning that "I plan to take it back to the place it started -- nature, being in the outdoors, and connecting with the community. Over the past six months, I've held coffee in the woods meet-ups, camping overnights, trail-running, and more. I want to continue to do these types of organized events and am even considering expanding to different parts of the country!"
In February of 2019, a Kickstarter campaign was begun to help cover the buildout and design of Landsmith Cafe and Outdoor Adventure Clubhouse, which was slated to include a cafe while also being a place for people to connect with others interested in the outdoors via weekly bike rides and runs as well as in-store and local clinics focusing on outdoor activities.
