A local contract brewer is planning to open its very own brewery and taproom adjacent to a new mixed-use development near the Somerville/Cambridge line.
According to a source, Portico Brewing is opening a facility on South Street in Somerville, which is very close to the now-closed Somerville Brewing Company and next to the upcoming Boynton Yards complex which will include residential, office, life science, commercial, and retail space. A post from Mass. Brew Bros. states that Portico owners Alex Rabe and Alex Zielke plan to include a "pilot brewing system" while also setting up a taproom and a small kitchen, with Rabe saying that "We've always envisioned a physical space as part of the long range plan....Now we're looking forward to providing fresh beer for our local community."
Portico, which currently does contract brewing at Mercury Brewing/Ipswich Ale Brewery in Ipswich, hopes to open its brewery sometime between the end of the year and the spring of 2021. (Contract brewers use space at other breweries to produce their beers.)
