Haddad's Ocean Cafe in Marshfield Is Being Sold

An iconic seafood restaurant on the South Shore that has been in business for nearly 90 years is being sold.

According to a Facebook post from the place, the owners of Haddad's Ocean Cafe in the Brant Rock section of Marshfield have agreed in principle to sell the Ocean Street restaurant, with the post saying the following:

...after more than 50 years of working and owning the restaurant, we feel it is the time to begin the next chapter of our lives....The current plan is for us to continue operating the restaurant until the middle of August, 2024. At that time, the restaurant will transition to the new owners, the Assembly Restaurant Group....if you have any unused gift cards, to please use them in the upcoming weeks....Thank you for your sacrifice and understanding and enabling us to pursue our dreams. Without the support of our families, none of what we have accomplished would have been possible. With much gratitude Chuck and Mitch Haddad

Haddad's first opened its doors back in 1937, moving to a larger location directly behind its original space in 2012; the dining spot has been known for its array of seafood dishes along with classic American fare.

Fairview Inn in Marshfield Is Up for Sale

An iconic oceanside restaurant on the South Shore that reopened last year is up for sale, along with the inn in which it resides.

According to an article in Wicked Local, the Fairview Inn in Marshfield's Brant Rock neighborhood is on the market for $2,975,000, with the price including the kitchen equipment, the inn's furnishings, and the name itself. The post says that Robert and Laura Clancy and Robert's brother John, who have been the owners of the Ocean Street space since 2001, are hoping that whoever buys it continues to operate it as an inn and a restaurant. The restaurant section of the Fairview Inn had been run by Paul and Betty Disch until 2015, when they left and opened Disch's Route 53 Tavern in Pembroke; the Fairview closed that fall and remained shuttered until reopening under the Clancys' management last summer.

The building in which the Fairview Inn resides dates back to the 1870s, according to an earlier article here; the structure burned down in 1998 but was rebuilt by the Clancys, opening back up three years later.

[December 9 update: A new article from Wicked Local indicates that the Fairview Inn in Marshfield is still up for sale even after dropping its price by more than $1 million (to $1,950,000). The post also mentions that the business remains open while it is on the market.]

Fairview Inn Returning to Marshfield's Brant Rock Area

It looks like an iconic oceanside inn and restaurant on the South Shore will soon be returning.

According to an article in Wicked Local, the Fairview Inn has received approval by town selectmen to open back up as early as June 23, more than a year and a half after it shut down when the Brant Rock place went up for sale and the restaurant operators left to open Disch's Route 53 Tavern in Pembroke. Last fall, plans were put in place for a new owner to open a spot called the Oceanview Grille at the Fairview Inn, but the plans ultimately fell through after the owner did not open the restaurant in a timely manner and the town voiced concerns about the owner's business practices. The current group includes building owners John and Robert Clancy along with management team Robert Pruitt and Liz Bruce, with Pruitt being the manager on the liquor license and finishing up his work at the White Elephant in Nantucket this summer. (It looks like the restaurant may be BYOB at the start, as the board's approval of the license still has to be reviewed by the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.)

At this point in time, it appears that the Fairview Inn would be open for lunch and dinner daily, with a brunch offered on Sundays.

[June 30 update: Wicked Local says that the Fairview Inn will soft-open tomorrow through Monday bfore closing briefly in preparaton for their official opening (date to be announced). The article also mentions that the Massachusetts Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission has approved of their request for a liquor license.]

Oceanview Grille at the Fairview Inn in Marshfield Has Its License Revoked

A new restaurant that was planning to open in an iconic oceanside space on the South Shore has just been dealt a major blow.

According to an article in Wicked Local, Marshfield selectmen have voted to revoke the liquor license for the Oceanview Grille at the Fairview Inn, citing the lack of progress in its opening along with "questionable business practices" of the owner. Last month, it had been reported that town selectmen were concerned about the fact that the dining spot had not yet opened, with the plan being to hold a meeting where they could choose one of several routes, including revoking the license (which is what subsequently happened), not allowing the license to be released, suspending it, or giving the owner more time to open.

The post says that the Oceanview Grille owner has the right to file an appeal, which would go before the Alcohol Beverages Control Commission for deliberation and further investigation.

The Fairview Inn and Restaurant went up for sale in 2015, with the restaurant operators leaving and opening Disch's Route 53 Tavern in Pembroke. The Fairview building dates back to the 1870s.

[February 28 update: A new article from the Marshfield Mariner mentions that the person behind Oceanview Grille--John Davis--is appealing the board's decision to revoke the license of the place and the case will now go to the Alcohol Beverages Control Commission, which will make the decision to either affirm the decision, lessen it, or reverse it within a month or two after the May 17 hearing.]

Oceanview Grille Plans to Open in former Fairview Inn Space in Marshfield

A new spot appears to be getting ready to open in the space where an iconic oceanside inn and restaurant had been, even as it faces a couple of lawsuits.

The Marshfield Mariner is reporting that the Oceanview Grille is hoping to open sometime this month in the former Fairview Inn and Restaurant space in Marshfield's Brant Rock neighborhood. The article says that new owner John Davis is looking to have the place be an upscale restaurant and inn, with the dining spot being a "farm-to-table and ocean-to-table" place that includes steak and seafood dishes.

According to the Mariner, next-door neighbors currently have two lawsuits pending--one against Davis and the town of Marshfield concerning the hours of the restaurant and a second against Davis and the Alcohol Beverage Control Commission concerning the liquor license, with one worry being that the eatery might "disrupt the character of the neighborhood."

The Fairview Inn and Restaurant announced in the summer of 2015 that it was up for sale, as the tenants ended their lease agreement with owners Jack and Bob Clancy and the two brothers decided to sell, while Fairview operators Paul Disch and his wife Betty ended up leaving the space and now run Disch's Route 53 Tavern in Pembroke. The building in which the Fairview resided (and which the Oceanview Grille will soon move into) dates back to the 1870s.

[January 25, 2017 update: A new article in the Marshfield Mariner indicates that town selectmen appear to be concerned about the lack of progress going on with the Oceanview Grille, and that they will be holding a meeting on January 30 to find out why the place hasn't opened yet. The post says that the board have several routes they could go, including revoking the license, not allowing the license--which is at Marshfield Town Hall--to be released, suspend it, or give the owner more time to open. (The owner's attorney says that final inspections are expected to be completed soon, and believes that the town will give the place a bit more time in which to open.)]

Fairview Inn and Restaurant in Marshfield Is Up for Sale

An iconic oceanside inn and restaurant on the South Shore is now on the market, and it is not known what might happen to the spot.

According to an article in Wicked Local, the Fairview Inn and Restaurant in the Brant Rock part of town is up for sale, as the tenants recently terminated their lease agreement with owners Jack and Bob Clancy and the two brothers have decided to sell the property. The Clancys are hoping that a new buyer would keep the Ocean Street property as an inn and restaurant, though it would be up to those who purchase the place as to what it would ultimately become, according to the post.

The article says that the operators of the Fairview Inn and Restaurant--Paul Disch and his wife Betty--may be leaving the space in the fall (though this is not yet definite), and are in the process of purchasing the property in Pembroke where Bobby Hackett's Restaurant had been. If all goes as planned and they do open a dining spot in the Washington Street space, it would apparently be similar in concept to the Fairview though with a different atmosphere, and workers at the inn and restaurant would be invited to relocate there.

[November 13 update: Wicked Local states that the Fairview Inn and Restaurant is now closed and that Paul Disch is now running a new spot called Disch's Route 53 Tavern in the former Bobby Hackett's space in Pembroke. The article says the new eatery has the same menu as the Fairview and that the entire Fairview staff is now working there. (It is not known what will become of the Fairview Inn and Restaurant's space.)]

Arthur and Pat's Restaurant in Marshfield's Brant Rock Has Closed

A South Shore landmark known in part for its breakfasts and seafood dishes has shut down after being in business for nearly 40 years.

According to a couple of readers (and confirmed by the Patriot Ledger), the owners of Arthur and Pat's in the Brant Rock section of Marshfield have decided not to reopen for the season for the first time in its 37-year existence. The Ledger says that De and Art D'Allessandro had been planning to open the Ocean Street eatery for the season during the weekend of April 18 but ultimately made the decision to sell the space--along with a vacant lot and another building they own there. They are now looking to help figure out what comes next for the site, creating a "sort-of think tank" including talking with potential developers, possibly discussing a new location for a dining spot, and hearing ideas from the public. The article says that Shore Things retail store and The Latest Scoop ice cream shop--which reside in their other building--will remain in operation for now.

A Facebook post from Arthur and Pat's says: "We are truly grateful to everyone who touched the handle of our front door, crossed the threshold, and invited us into your lives. It was an honor to feel your presence in our restaurant and a privilege to be of service to you. THANK YOU for your support and trust."
