A downtown Boston institution that has been in business for 150 years is on the selling block.
Boston Magazine is reporting that Jacob Wirth Restaurant in the city's Theater District is up for sale, with the Stuart Street dining and drinking spot going on the market for $1,025,000. The post says that it will be "business as usual" for the 220-seat eatery until it is sold, and the hope is that a new owner will continue on with the place, though it is expected that there could be at least some changes once it changes ownership.
Jacob Wirth, which first opened in 1868, is known in part for its German food and extensive beer list, along with its Thursday and Friday piano singalongs. The eatery is housed in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it is the second-oldest continually operating restaurant in the city, according to Boston Magazine.

Bronwyn in Somerville's Union Square May Be Joined by a Second Location

It looks like a popular Somerville restaurant known in part for its house-made sausages could be expanding.
According to the Tables section of The Boston Globe, Bronwyn in Union Square may soon be joined by a second location, with co-owner Tim Wiechmann saying that it would be coming to an as-of-yet undisclosed location in the coming months. The post also confirms that Wiechmann and his wife Bronwyn (who the restaurant is named after) have indeed closed their Cambridge dining spot Self-Portrait, and that another couple is apparently taking over the Walden Street space and opening a new restaurant there.
Bronwyn first opened in the spring of 2013 on Washington Street in Union Square, offering a variety of handcrafted sausages as well as dishes with Central and Eastern European influences. CNN Includes Jacob Wirth in Boston Among Its Picks for Best Historic Restaurants
CNN has put out a list of 10 of the best historic restaurants in the United States, and a Boston dining and drinking establishment is one of its picks.
According to the news network's website, Jacob Wirth on Stuart Street in the Theater District is among the 10 choices, with the site mentioning that the German eatery "is the second oldest restaurant in the city...that is more of a local hangout and Theater District go-to than a tourist hub." CNN also notes the wiener schnitzel and sauerbraten at Jacob Wirth as well as their extensive beer selection, and goes on to say that "there are sing-a-longs every Friday night to complete the beer hall vibe."

Karl's Sausage Kitchen in Saugus Is Moving to Peabody
A landmark German deli and market in Saugus that has been in business since 1958 is going to be moving up the street later this summer.
According to their Facebook page, Karl's Sausage Kitchen on Route 1 is planning on moving to a more spacious location on Bourbon Street in Peabody, which is a short distance east of the Lowell Street/Route 1 interchange, and just east of Route 95. The post states that a move date has not been set as of yet, but Karl's could be moving into their new home sometime in mid to late August. The new location of Karl's will include a retail store and a small cafe, which will be offering beer and wine in addition to sausages, soups, sandwiches, and various German items.
[June 4 correction: While an initial check on the Saugus location of Karl's (including a dropped phone call) over the weekend indicated that it may have closed, the place is still open for business and will be until late summer, just before the move.]
[August 11 update: According to their Facebook page, today is the last day that Karl's Sausage Kitchen will be open in Saugus before the move to Peabody. (As soon as we find out the exact date that Karl's will be opening in their new Peabody location, we will post another update here.)]

Bronwyn Is Opening in Somerville's Union Square
Yet another dining spot is on its way to the Union Square section of Somerville, and the folks behind the place also happen to run a high-end restaurant in neighboring Cambridge.
The Boston Magazine Chowder blog is reporting that Bronwyn is opening on Washington Street, bringing to the Union Square neighborhood what looks to be a New American bistro that will likely have Austrian, German, and Northern Italian influences. The husband-and-wife team who own T.W. Food in the Huron Village section of Cambridge are behind the new spot, which is expected to open in the fall. The Chowder blog mentions that Bronwyn will be more of a casual place than T.W. Food, and it will feature a sausage tasting menu, specialty Schnapps, and an outdoor beer garden.
Union Square will soon be seeing several other restaurants on the way as well, including Cafe Tango and Fortissimo.
[November 20 update: Eater Boston reports that Bronwyn is planning to open in December, with the post also mentioning that the dining spot will have a full liquor license and the menu will lean toward Eastern European fare.]
