EHChocolatier in Cambridge's Huron Village Is Closing

An award-winning chocolate shop in Cambridge is shutting down.

According to a poster within the Friends of Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook group page, EHChocolatier in Huron Village is getting ready to close its doors, with a Cambridge Day article saying that it will shutter on April 28. The article mentions that founders Catharine Sweeney and Elaine Hsieh will be "pursuing different paths," with Sweeney "retiring to spend more time with her family as well as traveling, gardening and whatever else life brings" while Hsieh will be "exploring new opportunities and collaborations."

EHChocolatier has received accolades for their chocolate treats since opening in 2009, including "best ofs" from Boston Magazine, Food and Wine, Fodor's Travel, and the New York Times according to their website.

The Fishmonger in Cambridge's Huron Village Has Closed

It looks like a decades-old seafood market in Cambridge has shut down permanently.

A message sent by Leah Klein of City Living Boston indicates that The Fishmonger in the city's Huron Village neighborhood is no longer in business, with a Google search on the Huron Avenue shop seeming to confirm this. The fish market, which had been located next to the old Formaggio space (Formaggio moved to a new space on Huron Avenue last year), offered a variety of fresh seafood along with takeout/prepared items such as chowders, salads, and fish cakes.

The Fishmonger first opened back in the late 1970s.

Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge's Huron Village Is Moving into the Former Fresh Pond Market Space

Back in 2019 it was reported that a neighborhood grocery store in Cambridge that has been around for nearly 100 years was closing and the people behind a nearby specialty food shop were planning to take it over and open a market there. Now we have learned that their shop will actually be moving into that space.

According to a post from Eater Boston, Formaggio Kitchen in Huron Village is planning to move from its current space at 244 Huron Avenue to the former Fresh Pond Market space at 358 Huron Avenue, with the move giving the store twice as much room. Originally, it looked like owners Valerie and Ihsan Gurdal would be opening a market in that space while keeping Formaggio in its home, but as Eater says, "the pandemic hit, and their plans changed."

[February 12 update: Cambridge Day mentions that the pending move is actually expected to result in a hybrid Formaggio Kitchen/Fresh Pond Market business of sorts, with the new space including the specialty items found at Formaggio while also carrying the everyday items and staples you would expect to find at a grocery store. In addition, the article does confirm that Formaggio's iconic cheese cave will be reborn in the former Fresh Pond Market space.]

[February 19 update: A Facebook post from the place indicates that Formaggio's Cambridge store will be closed to customers starting Sunday, February 21, though pickup and delivery will continue, and that the plan is to open in its new location within the former Fresh Pond Market space by March 1.]

Fresh Pond Market in Cambridge's Huron Village Is Being Taken Over by Formaggio Owners

A neighborhood grocery store that has been around for nearly 100 years is shutting down.

According to a Facebook post from Huron Village Voice, Fresh Pond Market is closing its doors, with the note indicating that its last day in operation will be September 14, though the note also says that it shutters on September 15. This follows the news a few months back that the store was up for sale, and Cambridge Day had noted that the Najarian brothers--who own the market--were hoping that another grocery store would replace it. As of now, it is not known what might be moving into the space, so stay tuned for updates.

Fresh Pond Market, which first opened in 1922, has been a neighborhood mainstay that includes a butcher counter along with produce, cheeses, breads from local bakeries, beer, wine, and more.

[September 11 update: Cambridge Day states that the owners of Formaggio have taken ownership of the space, and while it appears that the store will continue to operate as a market under their ownership, it is not known for sure whether the Fresh Pond Market name will remain. (Formaggio is a group of specialty food shops with locations in Huron Village, Kendall Square, and Boston's South End.)]

[November update: A new article from Cambridge Day indicates that the owners of Formaggio will keep the Fresh Pond Market name, and that it plans to reopen in March of 2020 after a full renovation--though the market/butcher shop concept will apparently remain the same.]

EHChocolatier Opening Shop in Cambridge's Huron Village

A chocolate company that is hidden in an industrial building in Somerville is moving to a storefront in Cambridge.

According to an article from Eater Boston, EHChocolatier is planning to move from its current location on Windsor Street near the Cambridge border to a space on Huron Avenue in the Huron Village/Observatory Hill neighborhood of the city. As Eater says, this will be its first permanent public-facing brick-and-mortar location, as it has had pop-up shops while also being in its current home that, while open to the public, is inside a building in an industrial area and is very easy to miss. (Its building--which is located south of Union Square--is also home to Taza Chocolate.)

If all goes as planned, EHChocolatier will open in its new location in the late fall--and the space will also include its kitchen operations, according to EB.
