Tupelo in Cambridge's Inman Square Is Closing

by Marc Hurwitz

A popular Cambridge restaurant that features comfort food with Southern influences is shutting down.

A message sent to us this afternoon indicates that Tupelo in Inman Square is closing, with a Facebook post from the Cambridge Street spot stating that "With deep regret, Tupelo will be closing its doors after brunch October 7th for good." The Facebook thread indicates that its closure is due at least in part to difficulties in finding staff, an issue that has been echoed by a number of other Boston-area restaurants and bars over recent times.

Tupelo first opened in 2009, with owners Renee McLeod (who also runs Petsi Pies) and Mike Walker offering food items with Southern leanings as well as New England influences. The menu includes such items as gumbo, fried oysters, blackened catfish, fried chicken, brisket, red beans and rice, grits, and collard greens.

The address for Tupelo is 1193 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA, 02139. Its website can be found at http://tupelo02139.com/

Confirmed: Po Boy in Newton Has Closed

[Ed note: This article was updated on July 8 to reflect confirmation of the restaurant's closure.]

A restaurant that features a food item popular down south appears to be closed.

According to a source, Po Boy in Newton has been shut down possibly for two weeks now, with no signs out front indicating why it is shuttered, while phone calls go answered and do not go to voicemail. Calls placed yesterday and today confirm this, while a couple of posters on Yelp indicate that it was closed during the latter part of June. As soon as we find out what the exact status of the Crafts Street eatery is, we will post an update here.

Po Boy first opened in late 2012, offering Louisiana-style sandwiches with shrimp, oysters, catfish, and chicken options.

The address for Po Boy is 67 Crafts Street, Newton, MA, 02458.

[July 8 update: The Tables section of The Boston Globe confirms that Po Boy has indeed closed for good.]

Madear's Cucina Food Truck to Hit the Streets of Boston

A new food truck is looking to debut in Boston, and it will focus on an interesting combination of two cuisines.

Eater Boston is reporting that Madear's Cucina is coming to the city, with the truck offering dishes that offer Louisiana comfort food with Sicilian "accents." The article mentions that a few of the dishes that could be served include baked and fried catfish, fried chicken, crawfish, and mustard greens. A Facebook post from the food truck shows that they recently received a business certificate, though it is not known exactly when it could be on the road.

In addition to its Facebook page, Madear's Cucina also has a Twitter page which can be found at https://twitter.com/madearscucina
