Saladworks Is Opening in Downtown Boston

Nearly seven years after first reporting on its expansion plans into the Boston area (and six years after it opened its first and only location in the region), it now looks like a Pennsylvania-based restaurant chain that features salads, soups, and sandwiches is coming to the heart of the city's downtown area.

According to a licensing board page within the City of Boston website, Saladworks is planning to open on Tremont Street near where it meets Cambridge Street and Court Street by Government Center. Once it opens, the new eatery will join another location at the CambridgeSide Galleria in East Cambridge, along with more than 100 locations elsewhere in the country (the only other one that had been in New England--an outlet in Trumbull, CT--is now closed).

[March 11 update: According to a Twitter post from DTownBostonBID, the new Saladworks on Tremont Street opens today, about a month after the chain filed for bankruptcy (see article--Saladworks Declares Chapter 11 Bankruptcy).]

Saladworks first started out in 1986 in Cherry Hill, NJ.

The Raven's Nest in Walpole Becomes The Patriot's Nest Once Again

An Irish pub and restaurant southwest of Boston is showing its support for the New England Patriots yet again as the team gets ready for a big playoff game this weekend.

According to an article in The Medfield Press, The Raven's Nest in Walpole Center has temporarily changed its name to "The Patriot's Nest" for the third time in the past four years, and the dining and drinking spot is hoping for a win in what is basically a rubber match (the Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens the first time the pub's name was changed in 2012 but lost to them the following year). The article says that Ravens fans are more than welcome to enjoy food and drink at the place, and "may even feel comfortable sitting among the pub's raven purple."

Sullivan's in South Boston May Open a Second Location in Hingham

An iconic snack shack in South Boston is looking to open a second location, with this one being along the water on the South Shore.

The Hingham Journal is reporting that Sullivan's at Castle Island is working with the town to open another location at the Hingham Bathing Beach, which is just off Route 3A near Monument Park. The article says that the eatery would take over the beach's concession stand and tentatively be open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily from March to November, with the bathhouse being replaced by a new structure that would be between 2,000 and 2,400 square feet in size. If all goes as planned, the new location of Sullivan's could be opening sometime in 2016.

[March 29 update: The Boston Globe mentions that plans for Sullivan's to open in Hingham are still on, with the town's beach trustees allowing the owner of the eatery a 60-day extension for issues related to engineering (including utilities). The article says that the new location would have a similar feel to that of the original snack shack at Castle Island, including 2,400 square feet of space and new restrooms. If all goes well, the new Sullivan's could open next spring.]

City Landing on the Boston Waterfront Is Closing

An upscale restaurant on the Boston waterfront is going to be closing its doors this weekend.

According to a source (and confirmed by The Boston Globe), City Landing is shutting down at the end of business hours Saturday (January 10), with chef and owner Bill Brodsky moving on to become chief culinary officer at Boston Nightlife Ventures (Forum, Griddler's, Tap Trailhouse, Wink & Nod). A press release sent this morning also mentions that City Landing workers will join Brodsky at BNV, including Chef de Cuisine Patrick Enage, who will be the "driving culinary force" behind Wink & Nod's next rotating pop-up concept this spring. Brodsky will also be behind the second location of Griddler's, which will open on Boylston Street across from Boston Common.

City Landing first opened in July of 2012, featuring New American fare in a casual environment.

[January 23 update: According to a Boston Licensing page within the City of Boston website, a new restaurant tentatively called Old Atlantic Tavern is looking to open within the former City Landing space, with the manager for the proposed dining spot being Patrick Lee. It is not known if this is the same Patrick Lee who is the owner of The Grafton Group (Park, Grafton Street, Russell House Tavern, Temple Bar), as the listing mentions the name "Atlantic Shore Restaurant Corporation" rather than The Grafton Group; as soon as we find out more information, we will post another update here.]

The Littlest Bar and The Times in Boston May Be Forced Out to Make Way for New Development

A few years after first reporting that an iconic Boston bar might lose its home again, there is now word that both it and the pub next door could be shut down to make room for a new residential structure.

Universal Hub is reporting that developers are looking to construct a new complex on Broad Street in the Financial District that would turn The Littlest Bar into a lobby and some residential units--and renovate the Bulfinch building in which it is housed--and demolish the adjacent structure that is home to The Times Irish Pub & Restaurant, which is where a 12-story condo building would go. The post says that the new development would have space for a cafe on the first floor, with room for an outdoor patio included.

In 2006, The Littlest Bar was forced to leave its original home on Province Street where it had been since 1945 in order to make room for condos (it moved to its present location in 2008). The Times has been located on Broad Street for more than 15 years.

The address for The Littlest Bar is 102 Broad Street while the address for The Times is 112 Broad Street.
