Rod Dee Is Opening in the Porter Square Section of Cambridge
As a Thai restaurant gets ready to close its doors in the Coolidge Corner section in Brookline word has gotten out that the eatery will apparently be opening in a new location across the river in Cambridge.
According to notes from a Cambridge License Commission General Hearing, Rod Dee is looking to open on Mass. Ave. in Porter Square where the Cambridge Music Center used to be. The general hearing notes mention that the new Rod Dee will have a capacity of 40 and will be open seven days a week from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM. It also appears that the restaurant might not be serving alcohol, as the license would allow only food and non-alcoholic beverages to be sold. (If this changes, we will post another update here.)
[December 30 update: According to a poster on Chowhound, the new Rod Dee in Porter Square is now open. A call placed to Rod Dee in Brookline has indicated that today is the first day of business for the new Cambridge location.]

News Elsewhere: Wine Vending Machines Come to Pennsylvania
Don't expect them to come to Massachusetts anytime soon, but wine vending machines have become reality a couple of states away from us.
According to the Associated Press, Pennsylvania has become the first state in the country to allow wine kiosks, thanks in part to the state's rather complicated liquor laws. The first two vending machines were introduced within grocery stores, with the possibility of their being placed in approximately 100 other stores depending on how well the machines do.
The process itself is relatively simple; according to the AP, a person picks a bottle of wine via a touch-screen display, swipes his or her driver's license, looks into a surveillance camera, and blows into a breathalyzer. If all goes well, the person is then able to purchase a bottle of wine from the machine.
The AP article mentions that the president of Simple Brands (the company that provides the kiosks) sees the possibility of the wine vending machines coming to other states at some point in the future.

Think Tank in Cambridge Temporarily Closed Due to Flooding
Less than a month after it opened, a restaurant and bar in the Kendall Square section of Cambridge has had to close its doors for the time being, all because of the flooding rains that hit the area over the weekend.
According to the Cantabrigia blog on Wicked Local, Grub Street Boston, and several other sources, Think Tank at 1 Kendall Square sustained major water damage due to the storms on Saturday that brought about three inches of rain to Cambridge and Somerville in a very short period of time. A note on the restaurant's Facebook page mentions that one foot of water damaged the entire space, and a more recent photo just put up shows a substantial amount of water on the patio outside their front door as well. The Facebook note states that Think Tank will need at least two months to rebuild.

Aprile's European Restaurant Opens in North Chelmsford
The European Restaurant in the North End may be long gone, but the pizza--and other dishes--from that local landmark lives on at a new spot north of Boston.
According to the restaurant's website as well as an earlier note from the writer of the I'm Your Server Not Your Servant blog on our Boston's Hidden Restaurants Facebook page, the same family that owned the European Restaurant (which had been on Hanover Street in Boston's North End) has opened a new spot in North Chelmsford called Aprile's European Restaurant. Located on Princeton Street where Bainbridge's Restaurant used to be, Aprile's European Restaurant is housed in a spacious old brick millhouse with plenty of seating, exposed brick, and exposed pipes along the ceiling.
The menu at Aprile's European Restaurant features a variety of Italian dishes including veal, chicken, steak, seafood, and pasta, and the pizza section of the menu includes three sizes of pies, including one that is 25 inches in diameter.
The people behind Aprile's European Restaurant also run Gaetano's on Route 28 on Stoneham.

Hooked Seafood and Grill Opens in Marblehead
A new restaurant has just opened in Marblehead, and it looks like it will be a place to go for seafood and New England fare.
According to their Twitter page, Hooked Seafood & Grill opened about a week ago on Pleasant Street, bringing to the area a dine-in and takeout spot with a variety of seafood dishes. According to a springtime article from North Shore Dish, customers order at the counter at Hooked and, if dining in, have their food brought to them. It sounds like Hooked will do much of their business on the takeout end, as their website has a note about diners taking their food over to the nearby beach (Devereux Beach is less than a mile away). North Shore Dish mentions that at some point in the future, Hooked may put in a patio for dining outdoors during the warmer months.
The menu at Hooked includes such seafood dishes as clam chowder, Maryland soft shell crab, lobster rolls, salmon burgers, crab cake sliders, fish tacos, swordfish kabobs, baked scallops, grilled shrimp, fried oysters, and fish and chips. For those looking for something other than seafood, Hooked also has steak tips, burgers, hot dogs, and grilled chicken. A children's menu has fish sticks, grilled cheese, and more.
