Another Mexican restaurant is on its way to Boston, this one moving into the South End spot where an Indian and Greek eatery had been.
According to Zagat Buzz Boston, El Centro is planning to open on Shawmut Avenue, serving both lunch and dinner once it opens, as well as a weekend brunch. The new dining spot will be taking over the space where Siraj Cafe resided for approximately six years until shutting its doors recently. Zagat mentions that the chef and owner of El Centro is from Hermosillo, which is located in the northwest Mexican state of Sonora (south of Arizona), and that the menu will feature Sonoran-influenced dishes as well as other items. Most menu items will be under $20, according to the article.
Once it opens, El Centro will join a number of other Mexican restaurants that have recently opened--or are soon to open--in Boston, including Jalapenos, Lolita Cocina & Tequila Bar, Mija Cantina & Tequila Bar, North of the Border, Papagayo, Temazcal Tequila Cantina, and Tico.
[May 20 update: According to UrbanDaddy, El Centro is planning to open a week from today (Friday, May 27).]
[May 26 update: CBH Communications sent us a preview of the menu at El Centro (which is still due to open tomorrow), and it includes such dishes as quesadillas, flautas, guacamole, tamales, chimichangas, enchiladas, tostadas, tacos, chicken in mole, grilled skirt steak, charcoal-grilled beef spare ribs, chicken in chipotle sauce, shredded roasted pork in achiote sauce, and whole fish in Veracruzana sauce.]
The address for this new Mexican restaurant in the South End is: El Centro, 472 Shawmut Avenue, Boston, MA, 02118.
