An upscale New American restaurant in the Davis Square section of Somerville is closing its doors after being in business for more than 15 years.
According to a post on the Davis Square LiveJournal site as well as in an email forwarded to us by ManlyEats, Gargoyles on the Square will shut down for good after business hours on Tuesday, September 20. A Somerville Journal/Wicked Local article mentions that the Elm Street eatery, which first opened in 1994, had thought about closing the place for some time now, but wanted to wait until their former chef (Jason Santos, who now runs Blue Inc. in Boston) made his appearance on the reality cooking chow "Hell's Kitchen." The Journal also states that a Mexican restaurant called the Painted Burro will open in the Gargoyles space (the owner of nearby Pizzeria Posto will be behind the new place), with one of the founders of Gargoyles planning to open a small dining spot somewhere in Arlington Center.
[September 15 update: According to The Boston Herald, in addition to opening a new restaurant in Arlington, the owner and his sister may also be looking to operate Gargoyles as a caterer out of a new space somewhere in Boston.]
[September 19 update: A call placed to the restaurant indicates that Gargoyles decided to close their doors early, so as of today, the place is no longer in business.]
The address for the soon-to-close Gargoyles (and upcoming Painted Burro) is 219 Elm Street, Somerville, MA, 02144.
