A New Hampshire-based retailer of handmade chocolate products that also operates a restaurant and three chocolate shops/cafes--including one in Cambridge--is going to be opening a fourth cafe, with this one being in the Back Bay of Boston.
According to Linear Retail, L.A. Burdick is planning to open a cafe at the corner of Clarendon Street and Newbury Street in the heart of the Back Bay, joining another cafe on Brattle Street in Cambridge's Harvard Square as well as cafes in Manhattan and Walpole, NH, where the retailer's headquarters are (Walpole is also home to a French restaurant called The Restaurant at Burdick Chocolate). The new cafe, which is looking to open later this fall, will likely feature such items as chocolate mousse cake, vanilla tea cake, linzer torte, brown butter tarts, chocolate croissants, tea, and one of its signature items--hot chocolate, of which there are several varieties.
[January 31, 2012 update: According to their Facebook page, the new L.A. Burdick chocolate shop in Boston's Back Bay is now open. (An earlier post mentions that the cafe part of the store might not be open until later this year.)]
[March 30, 2012 update: Eater Boston reports that L.A. Burdick in the Back Bay has received a license for its cafe, which looks like it will be opening in April. (Eater Boston received this information from the Twitter page of Boston Foodie Tours.)]
L.A. Burdick first started out in New York City in the 1980s, gradually growing into a direct mail and web business located in Walpole (just across the Connecticut River from Vermont). The company does not use flavorings, extracts, or concentrates, instead using high-quality ingredients and chocolate from Europe and South America.
The address for this new cafe and chocolate shop in the Back Bay is: L.A. Burdick, 220 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA, 02116. The website for the retailer can be found at http://www.burdickchocolate.com/
